2004 - 2500 Break In

I'm sure this must have been discussed before, but a search of the archives didn't turn up what I am looking for.

Does anyone know what the manual says about towing with a new truck? I know the Cummins engine is ready to go from the start, but what about the other components (rear diff, transmission, transfer case).

I have to make a short trip (10 miles each way) on a flat highway (except the rail overpasses) this weekend and don't think I'll have had time to do any driving before then (OK, maybe 60 - 70 miles). Should I just use the old tow vehicle this weekend or does tha manual say towing is OK?

My trailer is a 2-Horse and weighs 3,000# + horse (1,250#) for a total weight of about 4,500# with all my "stuff".

It's not like I don't have a tow vehicle for the weekend, but wouldn't mind taking the truck if it doesn't impair a proper break in of the drivetrain.

I believe my manual for the 03's said not to tow for the 1st 500 miles they they recomend loading it up and going to town. It also said that if you plan to tow extensively to change the diff fluid to a 90-140 synthetic,,,at least i think i read that in there.

My manual says wait for 500 miles. I waited for about 400. Haven't changed any drive train fluid yet; other than adding a little bit in the rear diff.

Thanks DF,

I thought someone else had said 500 miles as well. I'll have a chance to check the manual out when I pick my truck up later today or tomorrow, but was curious. I use a company van to tow my trailer, but it requires the route guy to unload and reload another van to allow me to use his - a bit of a pain. One more weekend won't kill me (or him) though. :)

the new AA axles come with synthetic already in the diff.

The manual for my 2003 says:

No load or towing at all for the first 500 miles;

Then, next 500 miles, towing or load ok, but not over 50mph.

This was supposed to be for the rear axle to break in, not the CTD, but I think it makes good sense anyway...
