I don't want to wait for mine to go out, so how do I know what the symptoms are if I don't have a fuel pressure guage??

The symptom you have may be a fuel filter in need of changing or may be the LP. If you don't want to put a fuel pressure gauge in the cab, at least get a test guage for under the hood. Could save you $14-2100 bucks on an injector pump.

I've been changing the fuel filter every 5,000 miles and it was just done 2,000 miles ago, so I don't think it's that unless I got into some bad fuel? Can any auto parts store check the fuel pressure to determine if I have a lift pump problem, or will have need to take it to a dealer?

Sounds like you have been changing the ff on a regular basis, that is always good. Can it be bad fuel? Sure! Drain some fuel from your filter into a clear container. This should get all the water out of the bottom of the filter. Bump the engine again to fill the filter. Drain it again in a clear container and let it set for a couple min. See if there is any water on the bottom.

Have you checked for any codes? Turn your key to the on position, then off, on, off, on and the codes will show up in the odometer. Write them down. They will be Pnnnn where the "n"s will be numbers. It will say Pdone when done. (Don't start the truck while doing this) Post your codes if you have any.

The parts place will sell you a gauge but I doubt they will install one just to check your pressure for free.

The dealer will check by conducting a volume flow test, I think. In TSB 14-003-06 http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2006/14-003-06.htm , they say "In a good low pressure fuel system, fuel flow of 560 mL in 10 seconds or better is expected for model year 2003 and early 2004 vehicles." Somebody else can chime in as to where/how to take that measurement, it may be the same way to get a fuel sample above, but running the test for only the specified amount of time.

Okay, I just checked for codes and got P0602. After a quick search on this forum, it's due to the Smarty and there's nothing to worry about.
I re-install the factory settings and then install level 3 of the Smarty back on (60hp with timing). Then I drained some of the fuel looking for water - nadda. I just took it for a test run and it hesitated once and then all was fine for the 10 miles trip.
I don't know.....maybe I got into some bad fuel cause I would think that if it was the fuel pump, that it would do it all the time, right?

Had a problem with the truck throwing a P0088 code (high Fuel rail pressure) The truck is now out of warranty, and had it tested at Massdiesel. Lift pump pressure was 5-6 lbs @ idle, and 4lbs @ 1800 rpm. Should be 8-10... Will have the FASS installed this Friday, as this could cause the FCA (fuel control actuator) to malfunction and cause the code.

I need to change my vote. My truck at 50k is, as we speak, at the dealer for what most likely is the lift pump. Unfortunately, I can't afford the FASS right now...

Is this poll limited to 03s? I didn't vote.
I have an 04.5 with 52K and the LP went about a week ago. I change my fuel filter every 10K to 15K.
The bad news, It left the wife on the side of the fwy.
The good news, DC covered the towing (within an hour) to the dealer and the dealer did the in tank swap kit and didn't try to get the $100 deductible (not required) that others have been told they must pay.
I was very happy.

Now for more bad news. When I filled the truck up after the fix, I found a fuel leak around the sending unit on the top of the tank. So it's going back.
Dealer was really good about the original fix and got my truck back the same day (maybe they should take more time?)
I'm hoping for better results this time around. We will see?

PS. For what it's worth, I had run PS/MMO pretty much every tank until about a couple of months ago when I stopped the MMO. I've been thinking about trying the two stroke oil? Not saying this had anything to do with anything good or bad? Just FYI.
