118 Miles and no start???????

A friend of mine just bought a new 4door long bed 4x4 auto. 5.9 Cummins

yesterday. It was the last 5.9 on the lot. Tonight he just called me on the

phone and asked why it wont start? He was at the local target in

the parking lot and went to start it and nothing. It would light up the dash

and had plenty of current from the batteries and when he would turn the key

nothing, not even a crank of the engine. He also tried to start in neutral and

then back in park and nothing. I told him to check fuses and start reading

the owners manual. He called me back about 5 minutes later and said while he

was looking at the owners manual he had the key in the run position and he

heard a click sound behind the dash and then the {PRND21} went blank for a

second or two and then came back on. He turned the switch and wala, it

started right up for him. I told him to have it checked out by the dealer

but he wanted to know if anyone on here has a answer for him. The truck

only has 118 miles on it so he is concerned on what it is. I told him to buy the

5.9 instead of the 6.7 so he wouldn't have any new problems that the new

trucks have been having but I didn't expect something like this to

happen. I told him like anything mass produced in the world their is

always a bad part sometimes and it will happen on any vehicle.

I can't believe nobody has had this problem before? So far it hasn't happened again though and he has it set up to go in to the dealer soon to check it out. I will post if they say anything in case it happens to anyone else.

Did he try to see if it threw any codes??
Cycle the key on and off 3 times ending with the key in the on position and you should see a code come up where the odometer is. If there isn't a code I think it will say "done".

Cycling the key will not give up the codes on a 06 and up truck. Gotta go to the dealer.

I don't think you're correct. I can get codes in my new 07 by cycling the key. I don't know what's wrong with the guy's truck though. Hope everything works out for him.

There are numerous threads about this problem all over this site. It happened to my buddies truck and it was the little yellow wire going to the starter that kept grounding out...and no start. We moved the wire from the metal bracket and no problems since.

We tried it tonight and it did work but no codes. It just flashed with blank lines where the odometer normally is and then it said DONE. No codes I guess, we will try and find that yellow wire and give that a shot.

Yes the 06's do work this way I have retrieved one code for trying to start my truck with a spare cut key (no chip).
BTW no it didn't start with the spare key(no chip).

Now my buddies new truck did another weird thing today. He was leaving my house and when he put his truck in reverse it began honking the horn and blinking the lights like he hit the panic button on the key. It did it every time even after he shut the truck off on restarted it. I told him to get it checked out by the dealer before I run it plowing snow this year. I would hate to have that happen at about 2:00am in a housing development. LOL

It may be the Sentry key not communicating with the truck's computer. I've seen that issue posted several times on 06s and 07s....
He may want to keep the second key with him just in case......

Just logged on to this site, but my wife has had this same problem.
What we did was to start pulling fuses one at a time , it may sound strange but fuse #11 Reset the something and everything worked fine.
Has happened twice now, got to get to the dealer soon.

The horn honking thing is a safety feature. If door is open in reverse and brake peddle isn't pushed it will honk. Lovely feature huh?

Sounds like electrical/alarm type of problem.

Loose connection (battery/starter....?????)

Corrosion @ battery terminals????

Security key/new key????

Alarm, factory or aftermarket??????

The first problem sounded like the sentry key (got to love those things, glad i dont have one)

The second problem is that safety feature, if you have your door open and something with the seat belt it will go off. (glad i dont have that one either)
