11.5 rear axle
11.5 rear axle
My rear axle was 3 pints low.MY question would be what is
the total capacity of the11.5 when filled to the normal amount. I could not find it in my owners manual.3 PINTS
could be alot if the total is a small amount. Thank You. ???
Re:11.5 rear axle
Ram lon ON,
Don't fill rear axle yourself, take it to a dealer and have them fill it. If they have a work order showing they filled you have documentation of a warranty problem. Sounds as though you are at least one quart low. Some of us have had to have ring and pinion gears replaced. Some of the low GL-5 problems may not show up for 20K-30K miles.
I have attached the page from the 2003 Dodge Service Manual which shows the Capacities. 11.5 axle is 7.62 pints or 3.81 quarts
Three pints low is marginal. I lost pinion bearings at 4 pints low in 2000 miles, a real bummer.

Wantabe lost his whole rear axle and auto tranny was tweaked badly at 65 mph. One wheel hub froze and twisted off.

Re:11.5 rear axle
Thank you SIERRA Phil, I did take it to the dealer nearest me
and they put 3 pints in it. They wouldnt or couldnt tell me how
many it did hold so I thank you very much. Now I am going to
fax the invoice showing the work done to ,the Dealership that
I bought my truck from. I had told them to make sure all fluid
levels were good because I had a 200 mile trip home. They
asured me everything was done when they gave me the Keys
with all the final paper work.
3 pints is darn near half what it takes so I am am going to
get HOT with them. Thank You.
Re:11.5 rear axle
Wonder where wantabe ever ended up??
My truck also siezed the left wheel brgs at 400k. New axle assy and at 16k all is good. The dealer would not say the rear end was low but I suspect it was.

400 thousand miles? On an '03 when first wheel bearing siezed? 16 thousand on the second axle assembly? Man, I haven't even got 11k on mine, and I bought it in November. Do you ever get out of the cab?
My gut tells me that DC "asked/persuaded" wantabee to keep his mouth shut. Seems he disappeared quickly off both boards. Or maybe his lawyers recommended he keep his mouth shut so not to possibly jeapordize his position in the future.

Re:11.5 rear axle
My last communication w/Wantabee was about 11/13-15, direct message. Hunter had one from him about the same time indicating he was having surgery. Then even threads disappeared from this forum. Maybe D-C as a condition of settlement with him had him agree to stay off forums. He could have reported to some of us regarding his recovery from surgery since that was unrelated to his truck problems. ??? ??? ???

The problem with low oil is that it can shorten the life of the bearings and gears, and you wont find that out until it's too late. The best way to tell, IMHO, is disassemble and look for scored/discolored rollers and races. It's not too difficult a job. If your diff bearings look ok, there's a good chance that your pinion bearings are probably ok, too. Also, the condition of the lube, and presence of silver-colored flakes is a good indicator of bearing trouble.

YeOldGoatBob,
Turned the A/C on high, fuel mileage went south. Did you see it goin past White Ghost. We have a three day breather, Sacramento is headed for the hundreds Monday
. we are usually 10-12 degs cooler. but have to take Purty Almond town there to suffer on Mon Eve. Gets a Flywheel and Clutch Transplant on Tues, Woopie! D-C says do what is necessary to solve the shakin. MI doesn't know this is Earthquake Country. This could put Cal Tech's Seismology Lab out of business.

Re:11.5 rear axle
Sierra Phil,

Wish I had thought about forcing the dealer to top off the diff's. I called them about the fluid levels being at the very bottom of spec and they said it was in spec and fine and not to worry about it. I ended up buying an expensive quart from them and put a pint in each diff case. At the time I bought the quart it was the only one they had in stock. The levels are now that much higher and I kept the sales receipt so I quess I have that going for me. I've been meaning to get another quart and put an addtional pint in each diff for peace of mind.
