10.6 mpg is it the cold?

I have a 2003 ctd ho 24v crew cab drw all stock. I live in Alaska and im only getting 10.6 mpg i have just under 30,000 miles on the truck. Ive been told that its b/c of the cold weather and ive also been told its because of the low miles on the truck. Now this is my first diesel so im no einstien yet. But i always thought that diesels got great fuel economy. In about 4 months my family and I will be getting reasigned down in georgia and we will be pulling a 37' 5ver and it weighs about 14,500 loaded and it will weigh every bit of that. Is there any suggestions that anyone can give me that i can do to get better milage on our drive down were not going straight their either i just got back from iraq ( 16 long months ) so we are wanting to take a little family vacation at the same time. But the main goal is to spend as little money as possible i know its kinda hard to do with a trip like that ahead of us but hey any help would be great. Thanks much kevin.

Yep, I'm getting about the same. 10.9 on my usual stop-and-stop commute the gets me 12-13 in the summer.

With me, dually+4:10s+ULSD winter blend+VERY cold (temp) in teens KILLS milage.

You probably have the 4:10's. That's why mpg's are less. You'll like those for pulling that load. Your truck is probably broken in, or close to it. Winter fuel, idling, not working the truck, etc. in winter time lowers the mpg's significanly as well.

I've noticed a huge difference. I went from 18.5 on the highway to 14-15.

My mileage went down with the ULSD, went down some more with winter fuel, then it got really cold and I lost some more. We're all in the same boat until it warms up from the sounds of things. My worst was 11.37mpg in temps that did not break freezing for 2 tankfuls. Glad the groundhogs say winter is all but history!

I guess cold weather really kills mileage.

Hey thanks for the quick replies everyone its good to know thats its a normal thing to get low mileage in the cold. Not that getting low mileage is a good thing but at least i know the truck is in good shape. I sure didnt want any of them ol i told you so from the wife if you know what i mean. Thanks again

They pretty much hit it on the head....Don't know what part of Alaska your in. Idling will kill your mileage, more than anything, toughen up no need to let them idle all day. I'm getting around 16 to 18 here in the interior, I only idle 5-10 min at start up an shut mine down when I go to the store/other places unless its below -30

Even here in Houston where it doesn't stay cold too long, my mileage has dropped about .7 mile to the gallon with the recent cold snap. That drop is for freeway driving only and using Wal-Mart LSD 500 parts per million. Well, the pump says its LSD...it smell a little different to me though. All I know for sure is that the mileage has gone down while its been cold for here.

first off - welcome back, must be a Stryker guy. I was in 1AD when we got extended downrange so I know the feeling.

My mileage is suffering now too, 13 mpg last tank, 4.10s and single rear wheel.

I'm headed to Alabama this summer unless stoploss gets me.
