its quite a bit louder. I am talking about the "clatter" at idle.

Valve adjustment? or?

I've noticed the same with mine. Starting to sound more like a 2nd gen under the hood when idling.

Most of the time this is due to carboned up injectors. Go and work the dog out of it pulling a good size load for 30 to 45min. and it will clear up. Get the EGT's up to 1000 deg or greater. That normally fixes mine right up.

Might want to check your valve lash. I've heard of lots of guys setting it to the proper spec and the motor quiets down a lot.

How hard is that to do and how long would it generally take?

It's pretty much the same process as setting the lash on most engines. I think the the settings are .10" intake and .20" exhaust. If you do a search there's quite a bit of info if you do a search. I've never done it myself so I don't the specifics.

all my diesel trucks have become a little louder after break in- which usually occurs around 20,000 miles. the louder the better! it is a diesel!

all your rockers, pistons and pushrods are broken in, this is normal for diesel trucks.

My truck now has 16,000 miles on it, and tends to do it sometimes. When I tie it to something heavy and push it pretty hard, it settles back down for a week or so.
I relate it to the late model Cats that I work on. The modern day electronic diesel engine makes more hp and RPM than their earlier counterparts. These engines do it while producing less emmisions. High injection pressures, high flow rates, high injection duration times...etc... When you have the capability of making 300hp. and 25 psi of boost and you run around on 100 hp. at 5 psi of boost all the time, things are going to "carbon up". Engine never really gets to operating temperature. By that, I mean getting the iron up to full operating temperature, coolant, and engine oil.
My wife is just as guilty with my truck. She drives 5 miles from from home to work, never gets past 50 mph, and if you could data log the manifold pressure, I bet she doesn't get over 5 psi of boost.
All this being said, now ya'll know why I just bought her a new Jeep.!!!

I notice mine is louder when it's cold. When it warms up where it should be, it gets more quiet. Also, getting it out in the open and puching it wide open for a little while seems to help.

The cause may also be ULSD fuel. Do you add 2-stroke oil to your fuel? That helps too.
