06 Mileage question
06 Mileage question
I know this has proabaly been asked but here goes again. I have a stock 06. My mileage has not been that good . I baby it on purpose to try to get the best mileage. In town around 13 to 14,and Hiway around 15. It has 19,000 miles on it. dealer has told me for an 06 this is normal. Anybody have any other opinions for a stock 06. I also was told by dealership that beginning in 06 the increased HP which in the 5.9,which will decrease the mileage. At $4.19 per gal its getting to the point of breaking my bank account. Any help would be appreciated.
It would help if your signature was filled in with the details of your truck.Milage varies depending on your set-up. 2wd vs 4wd, gears, lifts, size tires your running, mods, etc. You can see my set-up in my sig. I get 17.5 city driving back and forth to work everyday and about 19.5 hwy with cruise set on 65. Notice my tire size. If I went back with stocks, I would get about 1 mpg better. I took a little hit with the bigger tires, but love the look of them over stocks. I would say that your milage seems a little low, but then again, I do not know your set-up!

Air up the tires, coast to all stops, get advanced timing (either through aftermarket fueling box or roktech crankshaft timing sensor). Aftermarket Torque converters will also increase mileage by allowing lockup at lower engine speeds. Bigger tires can help on the highway, but usually hurt mileage in stop/go situations. Do you hand calculate your mpg or look at the overhead average? Did you get your TIPM recalibrated for the new tire size?
What gear ratio do you have (3.7 or 4.1)? How do you use your truck (hwy high speed or in town low speed). Do you tow often? If not, taller gearing may be the way to go.
As you can see there are a lot of variables that will effect your mileage.
Here's another data point on an 06. This past weekend I ran out to Virginia and back to southern Maryland. Mostly highway, running around 65 mph, no load. Mileage on the dislplay says 18.9 mpg.
My truck is bone stock other than a CB and a trailer Brake Controller. I have about 17K miles on the odo. I'm told it should get better up to about 30K miles.
My truck is a six speed manual, 4X4, with the 3.73 diffs.

To me it looks like your hwy mileage is a bit low at 15 mpg and town is about right on. Mine is between 18-20 mph on the hwy empty at speed under 70 MPH. I would check the air in the tires and keep them at 65-70 front and 55-60 rear when not towing or hauling heavy weight. Don't drive it like a V gas engine when starting from a dead stop. Try to keep the engine RPM's under 2,000 and around 17-1800 when starting from a stop until you get up to speed should help you get better fuel mileage.
I agree your mileage does appear a little low. My 06 is an automatic and stock but I have learned thru the site and trial and error that you need to work these engines some. Get on the throttle and blow some of the carbon out or better yet pull something. I find when I drive around like "granny" my mileage starts to fall off after a few weeks. And then, just for the truck , I drive pretty hard on the fast pedal for a day or so seems to help me. I have 38k on the engine now and it would just make 18mpg on highway driving just around 70-72mph and this winter was getting 14-15mpg. Now lately it has come up this year and last trip got just over 19.5 mpg. It was probably off winter blend and last week had to pull my boat to a canvas repair shop so it got some excercise. Oh by the way numbers are all hand calcuated, I have a Excel spreadsheet I use to keep track of my mileage, overhead mpg & time for work and mostly to be able to detect if I ever get a sudden drop in mileage. My overall mileage since new was somewhere like 15.5 mpg, not bad for towing, city, hwy, winter driving
and all that. Hope it is of some help.
and all that. Hope it is of some help.

As others have said:
Keep revs below 2k (auto or manual)
Keep freeway speed down; <70mph is preferred, <65 is best
Keep tire pressure up
For Auto's, Try tow/haul and let the TC lock up ~30mph
If you have a jake, leave it on and ride the jake to stop lights, etc.
Driving like this, I get 14.5mpg around town and 18.5mpg freeway.

With only 19K on the engine, unless you've towed heavy, it's not yet totally broken in. I don't tow heavy with mine, and I noticed a definite increase in mileage after passing the 20K mark. I'm at 53K now, and average 18.5 mpg driving back and forth to work, which is a 23 mile commute, half in town and half highway at 60 - 65 mph.
my 06
I forgot to mention that it is an automatic, 3.73 gear. I had driven it for awhile. ( 3 weeks) indiana had been cold so I was thinking I might have had winter blend. This past weekend I filled up at a Flyin J pulling a horse trailer with 4 horses and was getting about 12 MPG. Driving no more the 65MPH. weeks ago same trailer but was hauling quads which are considerably lighter and driving between 65 and 70 and got 10MPG. I have been reading alot on the forums about performance tips. I was thinking about the quadzilla mileage max. Anybody have had good luck with these? Tire pressure is correct front and rear as per the manufacture.
Thanks for everyones help.

If you have a warranty to worry about the look at the Smarty or Smarty Jr. Smarty is the only brand that leave no trace of its self in the ECU for Dodge to find and void your warranty.
I had the same problem that you had someone on the board told me it was an issue with this year with hard starts, blowin white smoke, and crappy fuel mileage. So I told the dealer this and they went and reflashed the computer with a new update and whamo im getting 20s. Just like everybody else said make sure you take off your programer before you take it in for service or kiss your warranty goodbye.
