06 2500 Auto not shifting when merging on the freeway

Hey folks. I just got a used 06 2500/auto w/ 26k on the ticker. This is our first diesel and we're loving it!

One thing I've noticed is that when I'm merging onto the freeway, and I lay into the throttle (WOT), it'll downshift and peak at 3k RPM and just sit there (doesn't go any faster it just kinda keeps putting along). It will eventually upshift and start moving pretty good. Any ideas?

It'll also kinda do the same thing when using cruise control. I'll be cruising along at 70 and hit the cancel button to drop the MPH down some (approx. 10-20 MPH). When I hit the resume button it will do the same thing, downshift to 3k and sit there. Its fairly annoying.

Thank you
-Chris

I think this is just a 48re flaw, mine does the same thing, I've got 31k miles. If you will back off the throttle a bit it'll shift then you can lay back down on it and get more acceleration. Congratulations on your new truck, welcome to DTR and the world of Diesel Trucks!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'd like to say its nice to know that its a "normal" thing, however I dont really like it. I dropped it off at the dealer so they could have a look at it. Being it was a used truck, I dont know the history on it, so maybe they'll come up with something. They're also going to do a recall on it for a rollover valve on the tank.

Sounds good, let me know what the dealer says about the tranny!!

Dealer said everything checked out normal. Why am I not surprised.

mine does the same thing. just rolled over 10K a couple weeks ago.

Same thing has done it since I've had it - 140K.

Is it defueling and that's why it won't go faster and due to the defueling it won't upshift because it is protecting the engine from lugging?

Try using T/H mode when you are going to be using the highway, and don't floor it...1/2 to 3/4 seems plenty to get on any highway for me, I'm always at speed by the end of the onramp.

I notice I go faster when I don't floor it, I always roll into the pedal, if I stomp on it and I get a huge delay.

No shift on the freeway

Throw a chip or programmer on that sucka and hold on. Mine did that when I first bought it. After I installed a performance program, it shifts like you would expect & will keep you nailed in the seat all the way to the speed limiter.

When I can afford it I'm going to get a Smarty. Problem is I dont want to make matters worse by adding more power/TQ managment.

Just today I had the tranny do the same junk, only worse. Same on ramp, 3/4 throttle, left the light and rolled into it, tranny downshifted and ran **** near 3500 RPM. This doesnt seem to be "normal operation" as stated by my local dealer. Is there a kickdown linkage adjustment somewhere? OR is it all computer controlled via a TPS?

Any ideas? [yuk]

I wouldn't ever let it hit 3500 RPM. That is a too much passed redlined for me + these engines start dropping off fast on HP/TQ after 3000 RPM anyways. FYIW

It ran up so quick that I didnt have any time to back out. By the time I glanced at the Tach it was flying towards 3500.

The point isnt that it can do it or did it, my point is that there is a problem and I'm interested in fixing it.

This is normal everyday driving. I dont think I should have to worry about what the tranny is going to do when I start to squeeze on the throttle.

Thanks

I can make my trans do the same thing if I don't take my foot out of it. From what I've been told the trans is computer controled so it does not have linkage to adjust. My self I had to learn when to take my foot off the go pedal so that I don't have a problem with my engine going above 3,000 RPM's.
