Was driving thru a storm last weekend and after a big flash and loud bang my truck died. Got it to the side of the road and it started back up, but I had no gauges, no cold air, had an ABS light, lamp out light, and it would not shift out of first. Well travelers is covering the claim, the Dealer is ordering parts (computers ECM, FCM etc.) one at a time to see which one will finally have everything running right. I think it's up to about $3000.00 thus far. Some of my exterior lights wouldn't even shutoff, guessing the light switch got fried as well while the lights was on. Man I've had this truck for 2 months and it has 4400 miles on it......Makes me sick! JDX

Wow that sucks. Especially when it REALLY wasn't your fault (unless driving in a storm is considered your fault) Good to hear there covering parts and some good money. Some of the small stuff like lights, switches all that, make sure they do last (be better if you have to pay for the cheep stuff, verses the ECM and all that stuff) Good luck

 

Make sure you check every electrical component. Lightning does crazy things. When it hits something it will jump around inside. No telling what all it got. I would suspect everything that was turned on at the time of the hit. Don't forget about your winshield wiper motor.

you might run into a problem with re cooking parts if they dont get all the burnt up stuff out of the truck before they hook up the batterys so stand by may have problems with the truck from now on. Sorry for the bad news

 

Yeah, I've already discussed this with the adjuster. I hope that all will be ok with it, but only time will tell. Keeping my fingers crossed. I just don't wanna run into a situation where DC doesn't want to warranty things in the future, trying to blame everything that comes up on the lightning strike. Oddly enough we didn't have any damage (arcing) to the body, but the adjuster and the tech saw where the lightning hit the antenna. I have faith that it will be all straightened out, but it may take a bit of time. JDX

 

I think it LEAVES through the antenna.Been involved in a few years back and the tip of the antenna had damage on all of them.

 

Been there- seen it- felt it. Got nailed during the nastiest storm I've ever seen -at least the servicing dealer is sure that's what it was- they couldn't prove it though. Heard a loud bang, saw no flash, all guages pegged 100% two times then she died. Had to deadstick the '03 to the side of the interstate with a fifth-wheel in tow- not humorous at all. Waited for almost 2 hrs to get towed to the nearest DC dealer. Of course it was on a Sat afternoon so nobody could look at it. One of the salesguys happened to be a former mechanic so he grabbed a "reader" to check the computers-- found not only no communication between the main module and the ptc module but no talky from either one- 100% flat line dead. After 3 days of camping at the dealer- 1 day of which I am convinced DC was having them scour the truck for an entrance/exit point for lightning- they replaced both main computers under warranty and we were on our way. Truck ran beautifully but as you can see from the profile it ain't the same one! Never can be sure what else was damaged during the party by mother nature but when you're planning on traveling to Canada a lot you don't need help finding a problem

 

So it ran fine afterwards? They have already replaced the computers and still not totally fixed. Some of the sensors got fried as well I'm sure. Anyway I'll keep it posted as to what all got changed and what not. JDX

I think, unfortunately, your truck may never be the same. I don't think anything struck by lightening is the same, including people...

 

he few I handled repairs on were fine after repair.Mainly major items damaged.Radio,heater controls,body and engine computers.Never saw any harness or wiring damage.repaired one once and it came back a week later with heat/ac controls dead but worked w2hen it left.Upon breaking them open saw the burned area.

 

Well hopefully it won't be much longer. Gonna call in the A.M. for an update. They where supposed to get some parts in for it today. Hopefully all will be normal with it. JDX
