05 ram diesel shut down at speed and will not restart.

This is my work truck and I need to get it running. 05 ram 2500 diesel with auto, 280K miles, K&N filter, no other mods. All stock and never had an engine problem before. All maintenance done on time.
What happened: Engine shut off while driving 55 and had just let off the throttle to slow for my driveway. Ignition still on and dash was still lit. After towing it up to the house, I found some fuel sprayed around the fuel filter area and the firewall behind it. It also ran down the fuel lines and was on the frame as well. I cleaned the entire area, check the fuel/lift pump in the tank and it was still pumping. I do not know what the pressure is, I do not have gauges for that. Checked the fuel to the injector pump and fuel was flowing to it. There was only one code P2607, which is for the B bank intake heater. Should not have stopped it from restarting as the temp was 95 and I was just finishing the return home from Dallas 60 miles away. I loosened up 2 B nuts on the fuel rail and cranked the engine, a stream of fuel lifted about 1 1/2" out of the holes on top of the B nuts. So there is fuel but I do not know what the pressure is or is supposed to be while cranking.
Conclusion: And this comes from a guy that is not a mechanic but has been working on all my own, and neighbors cars and bikes for 51 years. So I really do not know much. Anyway, I am thinking the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail has failed while running and pushed high pressure back into the fuel filter which caused the leak on the low pressure supply or return line. With that valve stuck open, the pressure can not get to what it needs in the fuel rail and be injected into the cylinder, thereby a no start. If this is a bunch of howey, then let me know. I am fly blind with no instruments here.

Thanks in advance, Dennis

Wanna bet that an injector line has split, like #4 or #6?

Be ultra careful checking on the high pressure lines as the high pressure is dangerous!

When you finally get the problem resolved, let us know what the problem was

Well, you called it. The number 4 is leaking next to the injector. I found it after your suggestion by having someone else crank the engine while I watched. I was doing it by myself before. The fuel shot right past everything toward the back and did not get anything wet. Anyway, the part is supposed to be here on Tuesday. I will install and let you know if that solved the problem. Thank you very much.

Double check the hold down clamps on all your other injector lines. Make sure they are tight. They can get loose and cause a vibration that can split a line. Isnt the #4 famous for splitting? I carry a spare with me incase it happens on the road.

Mexstan and 47Dodge - The #4 fuel line was the problem. It took me about 45 minutes to replace, most of that due to where the truck was sitting as to were my tools are. Also that new style bracket did not line up on the 10mm bolt hole the first time, had to take it clean off to move it over. Non of the others where loose, but that #4 was rattling before I ever put a wrench on it. Thanks again for the information gentlemen, it was a great help. If I can do anything for you, just let me know.

Dennis

Do you guys happen to know the Cummins part # for the #4 fuel line? Thank you

bigone9 10-05-2018 08:07 PM

Cummins 5289447 #4 Fuel I believe Thoroughbred Diesel Thoroughbred Diesel has them for under $40 but shipping was about $18 for me. You might find it on Amazon for less but it take a week or more for them to ship it for some reason. Thoroughbred Diesel

Thanks guys. Reading how #4 seems to be a common issue I will buy one and keep in it the truck so I am not setting along the road.
