'05 4spd A/T
My business partner's '06 is in the shop for his second transmission in less than 25K miles. Now my '05 is starting to do exactly the same thing his did right before it blew up. I'm anticipating a new transmission at only 50K. Here's my question; What should I do to avoid this problem again. I've seen a few post's on here about aftermarket torque converters. Are there any modifications or aftermarket upgrades I can do to fix this once and for all? I know nothing about transmissions, but I'd like to be able to talk intelligently with the shop. Thanks in advance!!!
It seems to search between 1st and 2nd about 10-15 mph. If I keep steady accelerator pressure it doesn't do it, but if I'm just slowly pulling away from a stop it does it hot or cold. I have a trans temp gauge and haven't noticed any change in operating temps. I haven't noticed any problems at speeds higher than that. Hope that helps, and thanks in advance!!
I few weeks ago i said that dodge tranny's are junk and most on here trash talked me saying they are the best on the market. So you might need to check to make sure its your tranny because everybody on here seems to think there wonderful and the best on the market.

People arent saying they are the best on the market, but the 48RE Tranny is an awesome tranny and the best dodge had up until 07 when they released the 68RE which is just as good as the Allison or Torqshift, and even the Chevy/ford guys will tell you that.
Mine does the searching occasionally, and has done it for 60,000+ miles. At 79,100 miles my tranny is still running strong with no slip. The bullydog low end power causes the searching. When stock, it does not do it.
Might want to look more into it. Many 48RE's do this

There is a difference between the 48RE transmissions.
I have the 2004.5 year with the OD lock out. Now the shift lever says it is a tow/haul switch but that is not correct. In other words when I press the t/H switch it prevents the trans from shifting into 4th grear. BTW I like this setup.
Now my friend has the 2005 year and it has a tow/haul mode. When the T/H switch is pressed it changes the shifting points but the trans will still shift into 4th gear. He hates his trans. He says the trans is always hunting for the right gear to use. Something like your problem but his also has the problem at higher speeds. There is a new TSB out for the 2005 to address this issuse. He took his truck in today for the reflash but was real upset when he got home and there was no difference. He is taking the truck back tomorrow.
The 2006 has a dual mode switch. Pressed once and you have tow haul and if you press the switch twice ( I believe it becomes an OD lockout) correct me if that is wrong.
I believe some of the problems with the 48RE are related to the changes made and this resulted in reliablity problems for the 48RE. Lets hope the TSB will help you guys.
I plan to do some upgrading for my trans because I tow very heavy. A valve body, billet input shaft, heavy duty or triple lock TC, maybe a flex plate and today I order a double deep trans pan.
There is some very interesting reading about a mystery switch which locks the TC. I have not added the switch but last weekend I added an LED light that lights when the TC is locked. This little LED light is giving me some very useful information.

Diagnosis...
So here's what they found; Governor pressure wass erratic. Replaced Solenoid-Transmission governor, Transduce-pressure sensor, and Filter-valve body. All covered under warranty at 52000 miles and took less than a half day.
Now it's back to smooth, powerful, predictable shifting!
