Price of injectors on the 03' CTD

Yesterday, I was at my local Dodge dealer (National
Dodge) in Jacksonville, N.C. I stopped by the service
department to see my regular Dodge/Cummins
Technician (Roy) and sitting in his bay was a
brand new 2003 Dodge CTD 4X4 3500 SRW, Black
Automatic 4 door. The hood was up and I noticed
that the valve cover was off and the valvetrain
partially "disassembled." I asked Roy what was
wrong with the truck and he said "Heavy fuel
was in the oil, Cummins forgot to put the seals
on the injectors!" They were waiting for parts
(6 completely new injectors). I asked him how
much they cost and he said $4,800.00 for the
set of (6) six!!!!!!!! I was surprised to say
the least!! That is $800.00 apiece!!!!!
I realize that is probably "Dodge's Price", but
that is still VERY HIGH!! I noticed that the
injector has a large top on it, and two wires
go to each injector. (Electronics for the
common rail I think.)

Quite a difference from what my six (6) 370
Diamond B Injectors cost; $549.00. You can
get a set of six from Piers now for $299.00!!

-------
John_P

Yup.

The electronics are in each injector instead of just in the pump.

Amazing, 1 injector for the same price we can get 6 for our ancient trucks.

phox

The good thing is that you may only have to replace the injector tips.

Bosch seems to hate selling quantities of tips. :'( A set of tips and needles, direct from Boch, costs me more than a complete set of RV275s. ???

I think we'll see the injector costs come down before much longer, maybe in a year or two. The cost of Duramax injectors has dropped 33% in the past couple months. I don't think there will be much need of injector mods, besides minor, do it yourself mods, for the next year or so.

Rod

I saw what a custom set of injectors did for a Duramax. If I had a common rail cummins I would be the first to have injectors.

I know your pain John

ive done injectors on my 05, and now my dads just lost the motor on it... Makes you want to go outside and hug your 12 valve that much more don't it? I know I hug mine daily now... commonrails are oh so smooth and sweet on power, but their Achilles heel injectors, OUCH when they go...

they are also more involved to change out, takes me three to four times longer on a CR than the couple of hours on my 12 valve..

im seriously considering selling my CR to go back to another 12 valve work truck..

the more I deal with common rails, the more I realize that one of my biggest mistakes was selling my old reliable 96...

don't make the same mistake I did.. EVER... your truck is too nice to go anywhere else as well (except to me if you ever do... )
