Oil overfill??

Oil overfill??

Changed the oil on the truck last night, and got distracted (was talking to a girl ) and put just a bit too much oil in. It is over the cross hatch safe zone on the dip stick.

I know this is a dumb question, but it has never been really come up before for me, should I drain some of the oil of is there some type of overflow to take care of this?

Full is the top of the cross hatch marks, above that is overfull. How much is too much I don't know but if it is a quart over I don't think it would hurt anything. One way to know for sure would be to drive the truck enough to warm the engine up good and then immediatly check the oil on the dip stick for foam. If there's foam you have too much oil, drain off some.

I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. I put an extra gallon in!

My reason for doing so was simple though. I have 4 Sterling Acterras all with the same ISB engine. For whatever reason they take four gallons instead of 3 -1quart like the Dodge. I drove it home the whole 2 miles from my office and parked it for three days while I took a trip to Nashville with a friend in his truck. When I got back I remembered what I had done and knew it was wrong. I drove it the 2 miles back to the office, rolled under it, placed an empty one gallon jug under the fingertip drain valve and extracted exactly one gallon.

If you're only over a quart I wouldn't be too worried.

So as long as I have a good oil pressure reading and no foam in the oil, things should be OK...?

Can not rely on pressure reading due to the oil pressure gauge on the third gen trucks registers pressure no matter how high or low, it's constant. Can not remember what it's called right now, brain fart.

As long as there is no foam you should be o.k. but if it freaks you out drain off some.

By the way, how much above the full mark is it?

No problem. I run high most of the time. The only down side is I have a little more "blow by" to contend with.

Blueball, I mean Bluebull,

The factory oil pressure gauge is an idiot gauge. It is purely cosmetic. Once oil pressure drops below 6psi it will throw the check gauges light, but by then it is usually too late. What DC was thinking when they did that I have no idea.

It is about a quart too much in it, maybe a shade over a quart.

smokindog your right but actually there are two pressure readings one low and one high what they are I don't remember.

blacksunshyne, I don't think a quart is anything to worry about but as **** as I am I would check for foaming. I highly doubt you would see any though.

not according to the wiring schematics... it is a single position switch... 6lbs on. after that ecm controlled

hot idling i have 18-20psi pressure [mechanical]
warm engine at governed rpm 85psi...

that is with 0w40 oil in it.

Mother Cummins has the solution to your problem...

However much you overfill, she'll undercoat your truck and oil the road with the excess until she's happy with the oil level. You should expect no harm done, but that dust/oil mixture will give you fits.

Nope! the third gens have an air oil separator under the plastic cover on top of the motor, it won't puke the extra out.

Oil filter holds 1 qt. Use a strap wrench or something that won't damage it, remove oil filter, drain, reinstall. You just got rid of that one extra quart.
