wait to start
does everybody all ways wait for the wait to start light to go off before starting,if the engine is still warm? i don't think it will hurt the motor at all, i'm more worried about the heater grids ,etc.on two of my 6.2l gm diesels i had the glow plugs wired around the controller to a toggle switch so they would not come on unless i needed them.it made the glow plugs last alot longer!and as long as the motor was still warm it cranked fine.

I always do it only take a few seconds. I've noticed even with the truck warm and it 100 outside, just turning the key and cranking still takes longer for the truck to start than waiting for the "wait to Start" light to go off.

If she is warm I never bother. Mine fires instantly, if I wait for the light or not. All the lights go through a 2.8 second diagnostic phase when the key is turned on so your wait to start light will come on for 2.8 seconds even when the intake temperature is hot enough to not require the grid heater. The grid heater is not actually activated unless the intake temperature is below 50 F.

Look at you volt meter...
If it drops to about 10-11 volts the grid is ON. This normally occur in the morning on a first start where the temp is below 70 degrees... You can still start without waiting but I allow it to heat for the cold mornings.
If it up around 11-12 volts the heater grid did not come on... Start as normal This means the the air temp in the manifold was warm enough for a start and doesn't need preheat.
But the WAIT TO START light will always come on for a bulb check. The heater grid is not like glow plugs. It will take awhile to burn out. You would have to see it...
