Value of truck.

I am looking at buying a 2001 HO 3500 6 speed manual. it has 167000 miles on it. Extended cab. 4x4. new tires and a new turbo s300. What do you think a truck like this is worth. he is asking $12000 it is rust free and from colorado. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks
Jon

IMO at that mileage, the 4x4 is a negative aspect. CV joints, tie-rods, ball joints, etc. - too much moving stuff up front to go wrong. Unless all the moving parts on the front end have recently been replaced.

Being in colorado (deer country) it probably has a front end replacement bumper which adds more weight to those poor ball joints. I always consider the ball joints etc when valuing a truck. The last one i helped replace was a 2wd and ball joints tie rods etc, were $1k plus just in parts. If nothing else you can use it as bargaining power.

6 speeds are awesome when towing, a nuisance when not. can you slip the clutch? more bargaining power.

FUEL PUMP - VP 44. another huge cost that may come about. has it been replaced yet? Is an aftermarket lift pump or fuel pressure gauge installed?
Anything other than all stock shows that the owner at least gave some attention to the issue, a good thing. search for "lift pump volume test" to check out the fuel system.

I gave 12k for a 2000 3500 5sp with 137k miles 2wd new tires. All the electronics and inside stuff worked like new and had been taken care of. I watched the dealer install a new vp44 before driving away. ball joints were stock and probably 80% gone. I feel mine was a fair trade, I didn't robb them but I dont think they stuck it too me either.

I think 12 is a little much, but lots of sellers list the price they want, expecting to come down some.

take blue book value and subtract value of items that will need to be replaced like vp44 - roughly $1500, ball joints ~ $1500, clutch ~450 stock. dont **** him off with little things like $100 here 20 there.

Wow my $.02 turned into $1.75. I will shut up now.

I put MOOG lifetime ball joints on my truck after the originals wore out.

Go kick the tires and waste his time nitpicking all the little things that all these trucks have wrong with them. Then say look here hoss, I don't think it's worth close to 12,000... The most I'd pay is 50 dollars. Look at all this crap that is wrong with it... It has a nv5600 transmission, that's an end-loader style tranny that costs a fortune to work on because it is obsolete and requires a ton of special tools and a heavy duty press. Subtract $2500. It might have a bad vp44 injector pump because I read on a forum that they are all junk. Subtract $1,000. Balljoints, haha!- Junk. Minus 1500. Needs new tires, they are getting a little bald. Minus 1000. Steering gear is leaking.. Minus 300 dollars. Tappet cover is leaking. Minus 500 dollars. It needs a fass or airdog because all stock lp's will kill the vp44. minus 500 dollars. Buddy, you would be better off paying me to take it off your hands. Blah blah blah.

So true , and then weeks/months later that same "somebody" may find his way here with a "Help, I got problems!..." post.

Wow.....its sounds as if no one wants you to have a 2nd gen.

All I can add to this is, if you've actually checked around and seen whats available and you know this is a good find then that would be different than if this the first truck you've found. Ask the owner for any and all maintenance history or simply whats been done to the truck. Any modification or improvements? Take it for a drive and look and feel for the obvious. Noises, vibrations, power, braking, clunking, rattles, oil condition, tires, interior, etc. Someone who cares about their truck doesn't have to have it spotless but you can definitely tell how well it was maintained just by its current state of overall condition. Especially the interior. Is it a 2001 or a 2001.5? Does it have the CAD front axle. That would determine how worn the front axle parts are. Any operant leaks or lack of care over such things?

Then look at the blue book value. Is he fair in his price? Why is he selling it? How bad does he want to sell it? Will he go lower in price? If you can, have cash IN HAND. That seriously helps with bargaining power instead of saying I'll get it in a few days. Especially if he needs the money. There's a lot of variables to hash over but the biggest will be how bad do you want it? You know that there's going to be problems, whether they're minor or not is just a guess. You know the engine could last forever.
