Upgrade 2nd Gen brakes to 3rd Gen?

Stamey's on to something. The brakes don't have to be upgraded to 3rd. gen. A big improvement was made in 2000. As far as I know, 3rd gen. brakes may even be the same as 00-02. Anyway, I'm sure the knuckles would have to be changed. Tha ball joints may even be different, I believe so on the 4wd trucks anyhow.

I have a 98 and a new to me 01 with drum rear and I can tell you the 01 will flat out stop the 98. And the 98 has all new brakes put on it a little over a year ago I even replaiced all the hardware and ajusters.

The 3rd Gen idea is going to have to wait now that one of my rotors has taken a turn for the worse. If I go with a 2000+ rotor/caliper package (2nd Gen), what needs replacing? Are the spindles and caliper mounting brackets the same? I'm still searching but not really finding any hard info. Sounds like it's going to be a fun filled holiday weekend...

The first thing I'd do is lookup the ball joints for your year and 2000, and see if they are the same part numbers. This is not definite, but it is a start. If the parts store has them in stock, I'd look at them and compare them, so see what's actually different. Sometimes they change the part number even though the change is very minor.
