surging below 50 mph like bad TP sensor

Perhaps I can save somebody some $$ and time. A few months ago I started getting a surging effect below 50 mph. 1st trip to the dealer and they decided the throttle position sensor was bad. They ordered a new one-got one for 12 valve. They replaced sensor with no effect.(correct one) The computer was re-programmed. Ran OK for a couple of months and started surging again. Finally the dealer called what they refered to as the "hot line" and in a nut shell the mechanic was told to cut a wire in the wiring harness and solder a replacement wire OUTSIDE the harness. He was told to heat shrink, tape and run the wire outside the loom as that TPS wire was getting induced feedback from another wire in the loom. I think there was a similar problem covered in a TSB back in '99. My truck is a 1998, 2500 Dodge Quad with the 24 v. If the dealer had checked with the "hot line" first it could have saved me a lot of money.

Welcome aboard, I might add if you would of found this site before it would have saved you the money also. This is the best site for information on your truck as in doing repairs and keeping hold of your hard earned money. If you have further problems come here and do a search using the search option and or just ask, Goodluck,,Rick Oh yea on the TPS there are two wires that need to be out of the harness from the pcm to the TPS, but if yours is solved I would not mess with the other one till when or if it gives trouble... And if possible go back and get your old TPS as it is more than likley still good.

For a bullet proof fix some folks use shielded wire on the outside of the loom. Take care to cut the wires to be replaced only at the tps, not at the pcm. Just tee in at the pcm end. There are splices inside the loom to other wires, cutting at the pcm end effectively disconnects these connections and you lose other electronic functions.

Hey Bill on the 94 to 98 12v the two wires that go from the tps to the pcm are straight run and do not branch off to any other electronics. The third goes up and to the front of the engine to a common ground. So if you just splice at the pcm there is still the chance of picking up interference with the two remaining wires left in the loom. Goodluck,,,Rick

The repair is just taking the wires from the tps all the way back to the pcm, some will just rewire the tps cut them at the pcm and the tps and install new wires in thier own loom/harness,and some will work the tps wires out of the factory harness and put them in thier own protected covering. On my 94 I was having problems with the tc unlocking at highway cruising speeds, so before I went into the tps and took it apart to clean and or replace, I had heard of some guys taking the wires out or rewire, and I opted to take the factory ones out and it has solved all my tps problems to date for some better part of a year,{knock on wood}. Here is great thread on the tps take apart and cleaning procedure https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...&highlight=TPS Pappyman did a good job on this one, I have yet to take mine apart as I am having no problems, but the moment I do I will follow what he did in this thread. I also wired in a manual lockup switch to use in limbo if I am away from the house on a trip and the tps starts acting up as it would be a headache to be away from home a great distance and the tc starts the unlock problem again. Goodluck,,,Rick
