Steering Noise
My steering has a low "growl" when I make right turns at low speeds. It sounds like it may be coming from the steering column. Any ideas what the problem might be?
The fluid resivoir is full.

Re:Steering Noise
I used a suction gun to pull the old fluid out. And then put new stuff back in. It amazed me at the difference.
I think new fluid is probably the same price as a stop leak type stuff. The old fluid I took out was a dark brown. I think it is better to change it out.

Re:Steering Noise
The "Lucas" PS, SL worked great! ;D ;D ;D
The "growl" is almost completely gone and the steering is a little tighter. Next, I'll trying the adjusting screw on the steering box to tweek the steering.
Thanks Again,
CR

Re:Steering Noise
Good deal on removing the old fluid and replacing with new. Do this a total of 3 or 4 times (with some driving in between) and you fluid should be close to completely replaced with all new. I agree, it does make a big difference. Just did mine today for the second time. Will repeat at next oil change.
Seems to move smoother as well (valvolene semi-sythetic), and yes, no noise. Kevin

Re:Steering Noise
Be very careful when adjusting the steering box. If you get it too tight you'll be oversteering every time you turn the wheel, no matter how little you turn it. :'( Steering boxes are supposed to have a little play.

This could be another problem, like the track bar. I suggest you post another question about that before you go messing with the steering box. It's just that the steering boxes do not need to be adjusted very often, if at all.

Re:Steering Noise
I added the Lucas to mine for the second time a few days ago and all seemed well. This morning, after the temp dropped to about 30 last night, it squealed like Roy Jones Tiger! After a few miles and a few turns, it quitened to almost nothing. I siphoned out about a pint or so and refilled it with regular PS fluid. I guess I'll find out tomorrow if the fluid was too thick to flow.

Here in Va. we have seen high 20's already this year, and I have seen no difference in the power steering. Are you sure it isn't a belt making all that noise until it warms up?

Re:Steering Noise
I don't really know. It got louder when I would turn the wheel. When I checked it, it had air bubbles in it. This was louder then the "growl" it origionally had.

Re:Steering Noise
Bubbles are not necessarily an indicator of anything because of the churning that naturally happens in the PS pump. The noise could be the PS belt, AKA serpentine belt, because it is put under some strain when you turn the wheel, because it now encounters more resistance from the PS pump. Usually it is a screaming sound though. You should be able to tell pretty quick if you spray water on the belt while it is making the noise. If the noise doesn't change much, it isn't the belt. Note, getting the belt wet will change the belt's sound, guaranteed. In some cases the belt will make noise for a while, until it dries out good, and in others it will just change tone, but still make noise. When I had my KDP done the belt didn't get wet, but it made noise. When I put water on it, it got louder and changed. I had to install a new belt on there to get it to shut up. And don't even bother with belt dressing.
