I wish I could offer hope,but after dumping a fortune into the frontend of my '98.5 I gave up. Sold it and bought a 3rd gen. Steering is tight after 40K. Even on this one,however,I did have to install the '08.5 upgrade.

Not really, it bolted right up. Didn't seem to be any issues whatever with tapers or anything else except the steering stabilizer. I used the original and a clamp from the old parts and just clamped to the tie rod and has been working fine. Mine is a very early '01 (build 1/'00) if that makes a difference.
