rusty door syndrome
rusty door syndrome
well today i was pulling my door panel's for some new speaker's.i decided on painting inside the door's at the bottom, to help prevent the door's from rotting out.from the factory there was alot of white grease in there ,to help battle the corrosion.i think all this really does up here in new england is trap dirt and salt.i ended up cleaning all the grease out of there, letting it dry(help from air compressor).then i got some rustoleum metal primer and painted the almost bare door skin's with a heavy coat.it did end up coming out of the drain hole's in the door, but i had some cleaner handy .
i was just wondering what you guy's think and if anybody else has tried to slow down the rust.i figured doing something now might save me some money later,as i just bought this rig.

My solution was to spray the heck out of the inside of the door skin + door sill with por-15 metal ready (or any of those rust convertor treatments) so it soaks in and converts any rust. Then drill a few holes along the lowest point at the seam so the water can exit.
I wouldnt paint or anything in there, it will trap water eventually.
Oh yeah, blow your forward cab corners out with compressed air, and use some rust converter inside the cab corners by taking the vents off. You can get at the fender / wheelhouse seam on the bed via the tail light openings

i have some eastwood rust converter and encapsulator, but i don't have any rust in there yet.i figured the paint would run into all the little tight spot's that the factory white grease didn't reach.
i'll have to check those other spot's too.

before i got my 95 V10 somebody had hacked the doors up pretty bad and they were done with PAPER and bondo, looked great til i drove down my gravel road for a few weeks, cracked them horribly. i had the first lifted ram in my town and now everyone has them and they are all fighting a never ending battle with door rust.
what made me want to try something, was the fact every ram i see has this problem.i think finding a used set of door's will be very hard or next to impossable.mine are still mint for now,but truck's only 5 yrs old.

Thankfully my doors are still rust free. To keep them that way I removed the door panels and sprayed the insides with a generous coating of Fluid Film. I also coated the insides of the rocker panels and the entire underbody of the truck. I plan to re-coat every fall as FF is only $24.50/gallon online.

You did well
I plan on POR 15 on my new doors when I buy them 700.00 a piece from dealer or 450.00 plus shipping Chinese. POR 15 should be on bare or rusted metal and chassis black on top of paint or POR 15 for maximum protection
