running boards/nerf bars

what are my options on some nerf bars/running boards on 2500 4x4 2002. couldn't i just make my own out of maybe 3&quot; pipe and buy some 3&quot; 90 degree elbows welded on to a plate then bolted to the frame<br>

My girlfriend bought my Grizzly double-bends from here:<br><br>http://www.ustaw.com<br><br>Even with shipping, they were still cheaper than anyone who carried them locally. That may or may not be the case for every single item they sell, though, so you'd probably still want to check prices locally first. <br><br>I have some pictures on the web of them installed on my CTD and my 98 gasser here: <br><br>http://www.jimpointeronline.homestea...ramphotos.html<br><br>and here:<br><br>http://www.jimpointeronline.homestead.com/rammisc.html

Re:running boards/nerf bars

If you make the nerf bars you need to use 2 inch not 3 inch. The elbows are put on the ends and the you weld runners out to the the tubing from the frame. You can make it cheaper then most places sell them. I made a pair of running boards for Gonzo's truck this weekend out of 1.5 pipe since his is a 2 wheel drive. If you got a welder or buddy you can make them pretty easy.

did yall weld the nerf bars to the frame or did yall drill out he holes. also how did yall get around the e-brake lines

Re:running boards/nerf bars

We welded them to frame and to get around the cable you have have a tab that drops down in order to miss the truck body. If your in San Marcos get hold of Gonzo he's south of you in N.B. He can let you see them. If you want nerf bars I can make you a set for 125.00. I'm in Kerrville give me a holler if you want some made. Running boards are more.

i had local exhaust shop sell me some 3 inch pipe for 2.50 a foot. got 2 - 8 foot sticks. this will more then likely be the cheapest you will find it.it is usually 3- 3.50 a foot but then i took it down to another friend that runs an exhaust shop himself , he has a 3 inch bender so had him bend it on the ends about 17 inches from each end. dont worry about the crinkles in the bends, you will hardly see them. i cleaned all the oil off the pipes and hurculined them, they looked sweet! no-body could tell they were made from exhaust tubing.! infact, i am getting another set made right know for my new truck, but this time another friend that works at a certain place is going to chrome them for me. I welded my first set right to the frame of my first dodge, but i will bolt the next ones on. had about 50-65 dollars stuck into them by the time i was done....

Exhaust tubing is not thick enough. It will dent real easy if it is hit. If your going to do it yourself get some tubing that is at least 14 gauge. Its tuff and still lite.

Re:running boards/nerf bars

I spent a little over 300.00 for my Westin stainless, chrome nerf bars. I don't regret it.<br>They have two rubber lined steps in them for the Quad Cab.<br>I have seen these on Ebay, but they aren't much cheaper than Pep Boys, and once you add shipping it might not be worth it.<br><br>Chris

Bought my Smitty Built's for $230 (included installation but I didn't trust 'em to touch the truck so I put 'em on myself) - I'm very happy with them - put some wax on them after you install - it'll help avoid rust in the long run....

Check out the stainless boards at http://www.j-jent.com/rbmilclatop.html The stainless top plates keep stones away from your rocker panels and doors. Pricey, though.

Re:running boards/nerf bars

I have Manik nerfs on mine and I like them very much. I did have Westins on it at first and they made a very harsh clunking sound at slow speeds, I contacted Westin and they were aware of the problem and said &quot; it's been happening on some trucks&quot; So I switched them
