replacing the console with different?

Has any one removed the original console and replaced it with something else? I am getting ready to bolt down the seats and thinking about replacing the console with a "box" that would have a lower compartment and the flip up arm as well.
This would give me room for a radio / laptop storage / better cup holders....

Ideas or pictures?

THANKS

Tim

Do a search on "center console". A while back somebody on here made a pretty nice one and posted pics.

I am thinking I will keep the original and remove the padding from the lower half and just box it in..may be some diamond plate?

Mine has some sort of electronic control thing under it that may be the airbag sensor.

Check that out just in case.

On the 98 it is the Seat Belt Timer Module..screws into a seperate frame from the actual console. The same structure that has the rear seat cup holder attached.
