Redhead steering alternatives
Redhead steering alternatives
My Redhead steering box has another leak at the sector shaft. Seems like I can only get 2-3 years out of one before it’s leaking again. It’s past the 12 month warranty, so it would be a new purchase to replace it. Any new alternatives for steering boxes out there? I’ve looked at PSC, but are they worth the price difference?
Redhead is a business, not a steering box model. What did you buy from them?
My friends like the delphi 680 box retrofit (aka borgeson). I believe there also kits to install the even beefier 6-bolt mopar box.

Weird. My stock steering box failed in 2012, and I asked the shop to only use a NAPA box. When I went to pick up the truck the guy said NAPA had been out of the right box and he had to get one from Autozone. That Autozone box lasted 13 months--exactly ONE MONTH longer than the warranty. I ordered a Redhead box and made the mechanic install it according to the Redhead directions. That was 10 years ago and it still works great. 471,xxx on the truck. There are specific instructions for installing the Redhead box.
When I did my RR conversion on my 92, I used Chip from powersteering.com. Chip is gone, as he sold the business a few years after my conversion.
My gear LEAKED at the pitman arm after about a year and a half. Chip repaired it for free, but I still was out of a gear, and shipping it 1800 miles wasn't cheap. Chip paid for the return shipping, though. Chip was a good guy and I was sad when he closed up.
Problem is that all the aftermarket parts for these gears are made in China. That means the seals the rebuilders use are chinese and do not last.
Powersteering.com has a lifetime warranty, and they (the new guys) said they would honor Chip's work for me, but I decided to live with it, as it's only a few drips from time to time. Check them out.
