Question on the Dana 60 front axle

Are the axle seals lubricated by the differential lubricant? If so, how does the lube get out there; sloshing effect, or lube level higher than centerline of axle? I'm concerned about the amount of lube I'm losing from my new front cover. I'm replacing it, but the maker of the cover told me to use only 3 quarts of lube until he can get the problem with the vent solved.

Re:Question on the Dana 60 front axle

I have the vent-on-the-cover version of the Dana 60. The vented dipstick doesn't have the necessary baffling to prevent the oil from being forced up the rubber hose and out the valve, and all over the suspension and fender liner. Jerry at Mag-Hytec is working on a fix, but until then, he wants me to run with 3 quarts instead of the nearly 4 1/2 the cover normally holds.

I've never seen one of those. have a pic? I guess to answer your question, the bearings would probably be lubed, but your gears would not be submerged as far. I don't think this would be a problem for a short period of time because of the viscosity of the oil.
my opinion,
Mike

I don't have a pic, Mike, but You can't tell the difference between the vented and non-vented covers. The vent is in the dipstick and the rubber hose is placed over the stem of the dipstick and runs up to just under the brake module, and is mounted on the inside wheel house.
