process on zeroing fuel odometer if possible

just wondering if possible how easy and the process of zeroing the fuel odometer that you can zero every time you fill up your fuel tank? just picked up a 1997 cummins and the fuel odometer when reset button is pushed goes to 409 but then moves up from there when putting miles on it so its almost like its just not at the zero point any info would help does this mean my actual odometer is off? it seems to climb normal when putting miles on the truck also!

Are you talking about th TRIP odometer? It should reset to zero when you press the reset button. Wouldn't have a clue how to correct that. More than likely its a problem in the computer.

No, they are mechanical on a 97. The reset button moves a linkage that aligns all the dials to 0.

I'm curious as to whether it will eventually move all the dials to 0 if the reset button is pushed several times. Also, it is possible to remove the speedo from the cluster and remove the faceplate. An inspection of the internals might help you to see a problem.

I realized after posting that truck was a 12valve. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

It may have a few worn teeth or even some missing, or possibly the reset arm is damaged/worn.
Its plastic and almost 15 years old, a replacement may be needed.

If you get in there and find plastic gears, as many have nowadays, search the Internet, and even Ebay for the gears, as there are people out there that make just the gears to replace yours. I know this because that's how I fixed my 86 BMW odo. I found a guy online that didn't want to pay BMW's price for a new gauge cluster (they don't offer just the gears) either, and he had enough knowledge about plastic forming that he began creating the gears and selling them online. Since then I have seen others making gears for other brands.
