Power Steering Pump groan?
PIcked up a bottle of Lucas PS additive at my local CarQuest. They didnt have any Lube Gard but the counter man had used the Lucas stuff in his Dakota when it had a similar problem.
Question. What connection is there between the PS pump and the breaks? When my PS pump is groaning, I can feel it thru the break pedal when I put the breaks on, almost like the pedal is jumping on my foot??

† Check the power steering fluid level.
† Check the brake fluid level.
† Check all power steering hoses and lines for leaks and restrictions.
† Check power steering pump pressure."
My PS does it too. at -10 it is loud enough for the morning walkers 3 blocks away to get off the road thinking a monster truck is loose.
I looked all over for the Lucas conditioner but only could find a Lucas PS stop leak. Is this the stuff? There weren't any other additives for groaning PS that I could find. Several other stop leaks and several PS fluid replacements.
I'm going to look again for the Lube Guard.
This is only a small town and the auto parts stores roll up the carpet at 6 PM sharp so Wally and FleetFarm are the only stores I get to locally.

You can order Lubegard online here http://www.lubegard.com/order/order_form_uscan.html
You want the Power Steering Fluid Protectant
It may be cheaper to buy it locally, I usually pay about $5 for it at Napa
Make sure to suck an equal amount of fluid out first with a turkey baster or suction gun. The bottle of Lubegard may not seem like much but it's enough to overflow the system if the PS fluid is at the correct level to begin with.

I was prepared to suction out some of the fluid to put the Lucus stuff in. But when I pulled the dipstick out, I discovered that I was, in fact, low!
So I added some lucas and have not had a groan yet!

I called Napa for the Lucas conditioner but only could find a Lucas PS stop leak.
I also looked at the Lucas web page and showed only the stop leak. Is that what you used. I see "Wings" had the same question.

Ok, I finally found some LubeGuard. at the local NAPA store. It was laying down behind some other stuff on the shelf.
It was the only bottle they had. So I drag it out and start reading the label and it says.." not for systems using power steering fluid in conjunction with brake systems."
What gives??? I know everybody uses it but is it really ok???
I stuffed the bottle back down under another std PS additive so I can go back tomorrow and get it. haha It's the only bottle in town and I haven't got the only 'groaner'.
Let me know it's really ok and I'm taking off work to go and get it. LOL
They have some really nice tire valve extensions for duallies too. I'll pick up a pair of them too.

This came up over the weekend on NWBombers, too.
I picked up 2 bottles last week and neither had the new labeling.
Well, I sent off an email to Lubegard yesterday explaining I use it in my Dodge pickup with hydraulic brake boost and received this reply today:
I don't think they worded the warning note very well. Wouldn't it be easier to say "DO NOT ADD TO BRAKE FLUID!" ?
Well, I can safely flush and re-fill my system again this weekend. I think the non synthetic parts of the Valvoline PS fluid wore out this winter. Another -35° night. Getting really tired of this. I had to get the winter parka out of the closet last week.

Mr. Erickson,
Thank you for contacting us!
The warning on the label does not apply to your Dodge. It applies to systems that use brake fluid for the power steering and the brakes, and are a common system. On your Dodge the brake system gets a hydraulic assist from the power steering pump. The power steering system uses power steering fluid (sometimes ATF). The brake system uses brake fluid. The two fluid do not co-mingle, so it is safe to use Lubegard Power Steering Protectant in your power steering unit, you would never put it in the brake fluid reservoir
Please let me know if I can do anything else.
Warmest regards,

Thanks for clarifying this. I'm headed down to NAPA and dig out my hidden treasure. haha
I think I'll just take and old sock out and soak up a bit out of the reservoir since I don't have my tools with me.
