The hoses, hydro-boost and other rubber components in the earlier trucks are not compatible with ATF.
I saw one where the owner used ATF, it took over a year before the rubber started melting but ended up doing over $1000 in damage.

I use tractor hydraulic fluid plus one bottle of Lubegard power steering treatment in mine. The Lubegard totally eliminates cold weather pump squeal and makes the fluid equivalent to synthetic.
Hydraulic fluid and power steering fluid are basically the same thing except the hydraulic fluid is much cheaper.

I've gone thru a whole box of Penzoil syntech, because of a leak at my steering box. Just getting ready to go buy a bunch more at $3 or $4 each, (I think I tried to forget)for a little bottle...or the royal purple? stuff I've heard recommended
now i can just refill those little bottles with my tractor fluid..

 

What brand fluid is compatiable with the mopar stuff.

 

Power steering fluid is power steering fluid.
Any brand of synthetic or dino power steering fluid is compatible.

 

Is it ok to just add the tractor hyd fluid and lubegard in with the synthetic ps fluid? or do you have to turkey baste out the psfluid before replacing with hydraulic fluid?

 

I've never tried to get every last drop of fluid out before switching to tractor fluid and have never had a problem.

 

I used to have a bad power steering fluid leak because of a bad seal in hydroboost. Replaced hydroboost with a Cardone through advance auto. No more leaks.
