Power steering filter

Anyone ever change power steering filter on their truck?

I figured changing mine before switching to synthetic fluid.

I don't think you'll find that filter in your truck from the factory. That's an aftermarket add on

There is a screen in the pump inlet that should be cleaned occasionally.

How often should the screen be cleaned? Would I have this on my 96?

Every other fill up!

No seriously, I bet when you change trans fluid would be a good interval.

In a different truck, I used to use one like that from another vendor (at more cost) in the tranny cooler line. Worked fine.

Now I use this in the PS return line of my rock crawler.

I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to install one.

Usually the only time the screen needs to be cleaned is if a part of the hydraulic system like the steering box falls apart or if you run the engine for thousands of miles with a missing cap.
Normal component wear is too fine for the screen and will pass right though. The screen is there to protect the pump from the big chunks.

True but after seeing all the shiny oil I pulled out of my PS pump, I could see where a filter would have been good to keep all that suspended stuff from passing through the system.
