Painting frame
 

I am considering painting the undercarriage with simple spray paint....probably rustoleum or something like it. The truck is a 1997 2500 4x4 5spd...lived in Charleston for the last 7 years but driven very rarely. There are no rust issues, a chip here or there in the paint, the undercarriage is very clean, some mild discoloration sporadically, some bolts here and there have surface rust. frame is spotless. Is is a reasonable idea to wire brush the trouble areas and rattlecan the underside entirely?

rattle can won't hold time over long period of time. Your best bet would be to used a 2K product (something with activator). Even if you were to sandblast frame then coat it with Por15 and then undercoat it, that would last forever.

My truck is also a 97 2500 speed,I use rustoleum satin black from home depot around $3.50 a can,makes the wheel wells and suspension parts look new but not too new. Silver R/T is right about the 2 stage products, but for the price and the time the cans look good and I don't mind touching it up once and a while, I just put new bilsteins in and the yellow and blue made my red truck look like a toy a quick shot with the spray can after they were installed and the truck looks factory again.

I just took my box off, sanded frame and painted
with POR-15 was a lot of work, but worth it.

Aight....i'll probably just roll with the can idea, the truck doesnt really need it but it would look good for sure. Thanks guys.

I just get "truck and trailer" black paint from TSC by the gallon and paint it on with a brush.

Somewant related, I just brush painted the frame and undercarriage of my 35ft Fifth 2005 fifth wheel trailer. It had some rust. Cleaned with a power tool. Use Rustoleum Flat and Gloss in other areas. If you choose to go with Rustoleum, use the gloss. The flat dries fast and its hard to see what you've done. The gloss looks better.

I checked the frame with a mil-guage and I only had 1-2 mils of paint from the factory, and it was going fast. Me and the creeper were good friends for a couple days.

The gloss it is then, I had considered the satin, but you bring up a good point. Any ideas about the rust converter stuff from rustoleum, seems a bit too good to be true. Now to find the time, and a good, comfortable creeper.......

I'm using rust treatment spray from pep boys and it works well. 3 to 4 coats and your ready to paint.

I never used the Rustoleum Product, rust converter. But, I have used a product called OSFO. You brush it on and it desolves the rust. You paint over it after it dries. Rustoleum is made to handle some rust.

Now if you really want to use some good stuff that can be applied over light rust, Ameron 235. Two part high build epoxy paint. About 54 bucks a gallon.
The 235 is a marine product made to handle hi salt content in the air and surface after application.

Yeap, the creeper is important. Got to have a high section for the head.
