Overfilled oil by one quart.
 

I changed my oil and filled 12 quarts instead of 11 "oops". Should I run it or try and drain a qourt out?

you can either run it or just pull the filter off and drain it. That Should be about a quart. [roll]

Step 1:
Unscrew the oil filler cap.

Step 2:
Hold an empty one quart oil bottle in your left hand.

Step3:
With your right hand, turn the truck upside down, holding the bottle under the oil fill opening until one carefully measured quart comes out filling the bottle.

Step 4:
Turn truck back right side up.

Step 5:
Place oil filler cap back on valve cover, tighten until it clicks.
Then place cap back on now full one quart oil bottle.

At least that's the way Scotty does it. [laugh]


OR just drive it with one extra quart in it, it'll be fine. :D

I've been using 12 quarts in both my trucks for the last 200k plus each.
Quite a few folks do this so as not to have a gallon jug with a leftover qt in it.
Don't worry about it.

No worries, the newer trucks have been modified to take 12 qts. The modification? Shorter dipstick. Also, I can personally attest that 13 qts will work.

I fill mine with 3 gallons even. The pan has plently of capacity for the extra quart and it won't cause any problems. I buy my oil in gallon jugs and I have never like to hold on to the extra quart so I always poured it in.

I've used three gallons every time I changed oil since 1989 and haven't had a problem at all. Using about 14 quarts now with the dual remote system on.

I have also always used 3 gallons at oil changes, you can't even tell you are a quart high on the dip stick.

Add an Amsoil Dual bypass filter setup. Spin on an oversized full flow and a BE100 bypass. Then you'll need to add an extra two quarts. or at least that's what I do.
14 qts of synthetic hurts the wallet, but only once a year. and I save the other half gallon for when I change the full flow at 6 months.

I've got 75k doing this too...

I run mine about 25 or 30000 with this set up.

Starting your motor with an empty oil filter is a no no. [nonono]

I've always ran three gallons even....as others stated, you can't even tell on the dipstick, it's on the full mark.... :D

Depends on who you listen to. Many engine manufacturers no longer recommend prefilling the filter. They have come to the conclusion though years of failure analysis that the risk of introducing contaminates on the clean side of the filter outweighs running dry for a few seconds.
