not charging

hi im brandon im new to the diesel and i have a 98 dodge 3/4 ton with a 24 valve. welll the problem is the altrnator isnt charging and i checked alll fuses battery and alternator and all wiring seem to be ok but i was wondering could a crank position sensor caues the problem cause i got a check engine light and it says cps sensor? any help or advice would greatly be appreciated

Yep, without the CPS signal, engine doesn't know to charge. Probably don't have cruise either.

o ok.... im not sure about the cruise but it does jump out of od to 3rd gear then back to od alot would the cps and cause that problem to and ill replace the cps tomorrow and thanks for the help man very much appreciated

You need to remove the alt. Have it tested at your local auto parts store. Your trany problem may be solved by getting the alt. to start charging. If the trany still hunts after the charging issue is corrected, you are having two different problems. The "hunting" of the transmission is caused by either weak/bad batteries, or corossion at the battery conections, or the battery cables are corroded internally. Most likely just cleaning the battery posts and cable terminals will correct the transmission "hunting".
Do not put any grease or oil on the terminals, it will become restistance and create additional problems.

the tranny was hunting berfore i even had a charging problem and as for the batteries are brand new and so is the alternator and all cables and wires seem to be ok

Nowdays just because parts are new you can't always assume they work.
I've had more batteries fail in the first few months than when their warranty runs out.

o i know they do and batteries are good already test them and ill test the alternatorto make sure but i believe its the cps i had the check engine light on and it said cps so ill try that first and update yall
