No Cruise Control

My cruise control began to fail intermittently about a year ago, and in December it failed completely. I am hoping the problem is the vacuum lines.

Anyone have any tips for replacing the lines? What size are they?

The one that causes a lot of cruise problems is a thin plastic line that runs under, or close to, the driver side battery tray. If your batteries like to drool out acid everywhere, you'll probably find a hole rotted in that small plastic line. I've found that you can get rubber vacuum hose that's just the right size to slide tightly over the ends of that plastic line, to make a fairly permanent splice.

Take a good look at the cruise solenoid too. Acid ate a hole right through mine.

I've had Optima red-tops in there for over 10 years.

or there are broken wires in your sttering column where it tilts or clock spring is messed up,

Robert Rausch 04-26-2014 10:30 PM

Thanks. I'll take a look in the tilt area. Last time I fixed broken wires there, I realized I'd have to stop using the tilt mechanism, so I just stopped using it. That could be the cause. I'll check it tomorrow.

Have also seen lots of intermittent cruise problems caused by failing brake lamp switches. As soon as the contacts get a bit pitted, the resistance causes cruise faults that can be hard to prove. For the low price of a new switch, it may be worth throwing one in.

A decent scanner is capable of displaying lots of useful data on Dodge speed control. Having access to one would make the diagnostic process a lot easier for you.

I did change out the brake switch 3-4 years ago. But you're right--they're relatively cheap.

The wires under the tilt mechanism are intact and the cruise switch seems to be working--I can get 12V+ in the hot wire, and from the set and resume contacts when I power the ignition and push the cruise buttons.

I seem to have vacuum to the servo unit.

I'm trying to find how much a new servo unit is, just in case I need one. Does anyone have the Mopar part number? Several ebay sellers are making several different claims on exactly which servo fits a '95 2500 diesel.

Robert Rausch 04-27-2014 06:16 PM

Can anyone confirm 53009315 is the correct number of the servo? Several websites list this for the Dodge/Cummins.

my truck: 1995 Dodge/Cummins, 2500, 2-WD, automatic.

Sorry, mine's still original, so I don't have a number in my files.

Thanks Torquefan. I appreciate your help.

That's the part number the 94-96 Factory parts manuals list.

Thanks Pat.

I paid $32 for the servo but it was many years ago.
No doubt they're over $100 now.
I know the same servo was used on most of the Chrysler vehicles of that era.
