No Cruise Control

I have a 2000 Ram 2500 4x4, reg. cab. The cruise control just quit. The "cruise" light comes on on the dash when the truck is started. When you push the cruise button on the steering wheel, nothing happens. I tried looking for fuses or relays. There are fuses for everything but the C/C. Did I overlook the fuse? Any help/solution would be greatly appreciated. I would like to avoid taking it to the dealer for repair if it is a simple fix.

Re:No Cruise Control

All I can think of is that there are two places where you might look for the fuse, under the hood and on the side of the dash. The light coming on when you start the truck seems weird, though, since neither of my 98+ Rams would do that. It's annoying as heck, but the cruise control turns itself off when the truck is turned off, so it has to be turned back on and then the set button pressed when you want to set it.
My 95 stayed on, so only the set button was required to set the cruise. Just goes to show that things don't always improve with newer models, I guess...

Might check the clockspring.
Don't know how to check it, but everything in the steering wheel runs through it.
Does your horn work?

There is a TSB on the clockspring, as the airbag also runs through it, therefore a safety issue.

phox

Re:No Cruise Control

You did not say what year you have but mine did that and it was the 90 degree rubber connection under the battery case. It had just rotted off from battery acid I guess. Hard to get at I had to remove the battery and case from the fender. Fixing it also stopped the blowby problem I was having.

Re:No Cruise Control

The year of the truck is 2000. Also, I tried the horn as suggested, and it still works.

Haulin, where is this 90 degree connection located and what does it look like? Will disconnecting the battery screw up anything?

Thanks

Re:No Cruise Control

Do your heater/airconditioning controlls work? If not, you may have a vac. leak. It sounds more electrical since the light is coming on though.

Sorry, I'm not much help on the over valved trucks.

Gene

Re:No Cruise Control

First the blowby. When I found that i had excessive blowby I went to Cummins for info. The service manager spent some time with me and asked a bunch of questions. The engine did not miss, did not use excessive oil, had not lost power or economy, and did not overheat. He said that the factory has recommended checking the vacuum pump before correcting any blowby problems. Near as I can tell the vacuum pump dumps the exaust from the vacuum system into the crankcase. So if you have a major vacuum leak it can and in my case resulted in heavy blowby. For a blowby check you can disconnect the vacuum line from the pump and close off the port on the pump. The blowby should diminish.

My cruise control had completely stopped working but the heater system worked fine, all vents were normal. The only thing that I did notice was that at a light at idle, when I would start moving i would get a rush of warm air for a second or two on a hot day.

If you follow the cruise cable to the servo it will bring you to the left side battery case. I fooled with the servo for a couple of hours and could not get access to the cruise control. I finally removed the battery case which has the cruise control attached to it. On the top of the servo there is a 90 degree rubber elboe connecting the plastic vacuum line to the servo. Mine was rotted off. Repairing this connection stopped the blowby and repaired the cruise controll. It is not perfect, but is as it was before the problem. This is on the 1999, I cannot speak for other years.

Re:No Cruise Control

Haulin, thanks for the detailed info. I'll give it a shot when it quits raining/snowing.

Re:No Cruise Control

I think I may ahve found the source of my problems. The horn quit the other night. The next morning when I used the tilt steering, the horn honked. This points to bad/shorted wiring in the sterring column.

Re:No Cruise Control

After seeking professional intervention, aka dealer service, the problem was found. As I suspected, cracked/kinked wires in the steering column were to blame. Symptoms were loss of CC, no horn, and horn honking when using tilt steering. The total bill was $70, of which $63 was labor. Thank you for all the help and suggestions everyone.
