Mid twenties fuel mileage in a 4x4, am I dreaming?

Hi all,
I've been a long time diesel fan :), actually as my username states I especially like Mercedes-Benz turbo diesels (I have 2 oldy but goodies). However for quite a while, even before I bought these cars I've enertained the thought of getting a 2G 3/4 ton dodge cummins 4x4, but the whole issue holding me back is the fuel mileage. I've heard of people getting a steady 21mpg (summer blend) in these?!? A friend of mine said they get 22 to 27mpg, sounds a little high but I'd surely settle for that. Are steady mid 20s possible, city/hwy mix? ??? If not what truck should I be looking at instead? Or what would a truck like this get in mileage?

Thanks.
Jeff M.

I just got 22 on winter blend #2 diesel on the highway at avg 75 MPH. Get @24-25 on the highway in the summer and 19 to 21 in 50-50 mixed driving. I love my CTD so look no further for the best engine in the business.

It is no joke that they can get into the mid to upper 20s. The older 12 Valves get better MPG 1996 to 98 models.

My dad has a '97 3500 and I got 22.3 on a camping trip (pulling very light popup) last summer.. it gets in the 17-19 range other time without a load..

My 2002 2500 gets 16.5 to 17 running around town.. 15ish when pulling a load (approx 6,000)... I got 18.3 traveling the blueridge parkway pulling the same light popup last fall.. the best i have gotten was almost 18.5 on an extended highway trip empty.. Also as low as 13-14 if using 4x4 a lot..

The secret to good mpg is keeping the rpms below 2000.. no heavy accelerating and no long idles..

Mid 20's every tank in summer I don't dive in the winter so I have no Idea. But I'm always empty in summer but my MPG is always consistant and it helps to always fill at the same station.

I have a 2001.5 QC4x4 auto/3.55's and just reset the apps (while I was seeing if disconnecting the batteries would clear the "no bus" code). Dealer had to clear the no bus problem. Anyways, hwy went up from 21mpg to 24mpg driving 75/80 mph.

Why is it that the 94-95 get better mileage than the 96-98.5? Different IP or just different gear ratios? The same friend who said they get 22 to 27 also said I should buy one with a lot of miles on it because as the miles increase so does the fuel mileage!? Pretty interesting that they do indeed get that good of mileage, time to do some more research on everything about these trucks. :)

'Benz,

My best mileage was when the truck was stock. The highest I ever had was 27.5MPG. That was recorded back when the speed limit was 55 during a summer trip of 375 miles round trip all highway. Although the 12V 2Gens have the same basic IP, they are different in HP ratings (delivery valves, injector sizes, plate configurations, etc...). Remember - Fuel mileage is inversly proportional to right foot postition.

I get a constant 17+ for around town driving. My best tank was 19 and my worst was 13. If I kept my foot out of it and brought my average speed down, I know that I could do better.
I am getting 11.5 mpg in the city >:( But I am putting my fuel pressure gauge on tonight to check pressure. I have a feeling the lift pump is dead.

I get 14-15 around town, 18-19 on a trip and 10-11 pulling the 30 ft. 5ver, 7-8 pulling out West in the mountians. Truck is stock 4 x4 , 3:55, and I run the truck. I keep my foot in it when running down the road.

My suggestion if you want good fuel mileage, get a VW diesel! They get about 50 mph, but you can't haul much with them! ;D ;D ;D

I love my Dodge Diesel!!!

:) :) :)

smokinjoe
ohio

I get 20mpg on 2001, 2500, 2wd, 5spd, 3:70, 11 pulling 34' 5er. 84 300SD 24 mpg, 84 V/W pu 5 spd. 35. I have never owned anything that got 50 and have never seen anything that got 50 that I wanted to own.

I can get 22mpg (US) if I keep the speed down around 65mph with no load. Hauling my 8' slide-in at 75mph I get 13.5mpg. Love passing cars with the camper on. ;D

Re:Mid twenties fuel mileage in a 4x4, am I dreaming?

I get around 15-17 with summer fuel. 12-13 pulling my 30' enclosed car trailer. Best ever was 18 in the summer with all highway miles. Right now I'm getting about 14mpg sitting in traffic everyday. I wish I could keep the RPMs below 2000 on a highway trip to see how good the mileage could be but I just can't do it. I had a new 92 CTD 5 speed and it got 22 from day one. I wish I was getting that now.........
