I did the 285's on the stock 16's - tire store said they would wear in the center because the rims are narrow for 315's.

The 315 BFGs on my truck have almost 50k on them with no uneven wear. They've got at least another 10k left too. Lots of guys run 315s with the stock wheels.

No one's mentioned that it depends on which factory wheels you have??

If you have the factory 16x8 wheels like those shown in Eddie C's post above (thanks Eddie!), then you can run a 315 tire on those wheels-- 8" is the narrowest acceptable width most tiremakers publish for a 315 tire.

But if you have the factory STEEL wheels (i.e. your truck came with 245 tires, not 265) then you shouldn't go any larger than a 285. The 16x7.5 steel wheels are only wide enough for a 285.

On the older trucks, some of the 245-tired trucks came with a 16x6.5-- which is too narrow for even a 265

I checked the glove box and my truck came from Dodge with 245 tires on those rims, my father bought the truck new so I know the rims haven't been changed. I don't remember what size Midwest Tire said the rims were, but they said 285's were the max with my rims and the Cooper ATR's.

I couldn't justify the extra stones for the BFG's even after I've had them on my last two truck and loved them, I just couldn't get the wallet open that much more!

285 Cooper ATR's were $673 installed, new valves & balanced.

Aha! I have not heard that before. My 305's are worn out more in the center, I thought they were over inflated when I bought the truck - but no, when I checked pressures they were actually 35 psi in all 4 tires! I brought them to 45/42 psi and have not seen changes to the wear pattern.

Paul, you might have the 6.5" wide wheels, which are far too narrow for a 305.

265s on those wheels are pushing it.

I just installed 315-75-16s in the front of my truck with no lift, I just trimed some of the plastic inner fender and some of the metal sticking out behind the plastic.

Yes, but didn't the 265s come on different wheels? I'm thinking of the 01-02 alloys.

So while the 265s will clear, double check your wheel width to make sure that it is wide enough for a 265. I'm pretty sure that the 01s with 245 tires got 16x7.5" wheels, so you should be fine. (you shouldn't have the alloys if you have 245s)

IIRC, earlier model CTDs sometimes came with 16x6.5" wheels, which are NOT wide enough to properly run a 265.

If you have the 16 x 7.5s, then you can run a 285 with no lift.

If you get the 01-02 alloys (16x8), you can fit a 315 on the wheel (but it will rub).

i know a guy who put irok 39.5x13.50x17 on his 4x4 with just a leveling kit and they cleared in the rear but well he could not really turn is steering wheel more than 1/4 of a turn or they hit in the front. he got a sweet deal on them and is trying to sell them but he just wanted to try them. i bet they would look nice on my truck with a 6" lift

I've got the Yokohama Geolandar H/TS 285/75R16s now and love them. No rubbing and they are quiet and sticky. They are wearing well and I would definitely buy them again. I have no lift on my 4x4. I'm going to run them out and then try to find some 2002-later 17" wheels someone is discarding and slap the newer brakes on the truck. I'm thinking 315/70R17s would be nice. A cheaper tire alternative would be the 285/70R17 which cut the price per tire by about $50. FWIW, The 245/75R16 size is: 31.4"
The 265/75R16 size is: 31.6"
The 285/75R16 size is: 32.8"
The 285/70R17 size is: 32.7"
The 315/70R17 size is: 34.3"
Tire Diameter = First Number x Percentage(second number) x 2 all divided by 25.4 then add the rim size. e.g. 285/75R16 = (((285x.75)x2)/25.4)+16=32.8"
315s are the biggest you can run on 8" wide rims.
