Trailer wiring

Hey guys can anyone give me a hand i got a 1998 3/4 12v cummins and im having some trouble with my 7 pin connector. the lights are dim and when plugged in my reverse lights on truck come on. anyways the wiring is old and has seen better days i wanna just start fresh and replace it but im wondering if anyone knows where all the wiring comes from if there is connector i can just start from or if there spliced in somewhere? im not sure at all
i havent even gotten under the truck yet im just doing some hw first so anything helps

I don't know where it comes from, but it sounds like you might have a bad ground.

If it's factory, there will be a harness that comes down to a plug, that plugs into the back of the actual trailer plug.

When we had a 98 3/4 ton I ended up just getting some heat shrinks and butt splicing wires in to get into a new plug.

take the male end apart and check it out I have seen alot of the center pins come loose inside and short across the other wires ,also make sure there is no water / ice in the plugs that will cause a short too
