Keyless entry question for the guru's

My truck does not have keyless entry so have been planning for a while to add it. I have a wrecked Dakota that we bought new and is just parts now with only 15,000 miles on it so went to it for the parts. The box for the Dakota fits the plug for the keyless on the Ram and the transmitters make it click but there is no lock action. I have an idea that it has to be enabled by the dealer as several options listed in the manual do. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also what is the box that is already there? Looks like it may already have it but has to be turned on and transmitters issued. I see no other function for the box that is already there.

Is there a clear answer to this question? ( I awoke it from the archives while searching).

I have an SLT with most of the options, overhead console, but no LED. Can I get the keyless set up from the dealer and install it myself? If so, about how much and how complicated?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Wish I could help.....I would be interested in this too......one thing for sure, it will have to be enabled by the dealer to work properly - especially if you have to have a FOB programmed for it....

I have an 01.5 and if the doors lock automatically when you drive then it is capable of keyless. You can buy the transmitter from the dealer for about $35 for the 01.5 and it will cost about $30 to get the truck programmed to it. The owners manual tells you how to program additional units if you already have one programmed. I thought the FOB was programmed to the truck but that is not the case, the truck is programmed to the FOB. I used the extra one from my 1/2 ton truck for my CTD. Now when I press the button, both trucks lock or unlock if they are close enough.

Just give your VIN to the parts people and they will tell you if your truck is capable and which unit you need.

Okay Chasd60, heres the thing. I know my truck does NOT have the module for the keyless (everyone with the keyless has an LED in the overhead, right)?

Now then, can I get the whole set up (truck stuff and a transmitter)?

This HAS to be some sort of "plug and play" box that connects to an empty harness under my hood. If I knew where and what it was I would start searching the bone yards.

I didn't have anything in the overhead regarding keyless entry.
I think that was a 1st gen thing, or factory alarm related.

PJ,
Yes you can buy a keyless entry system from DC to put on your truck. It comes as a kit to replace your CTM and a bit of wiring. It's a little pricey but at least this answers your question.

I've seen them on eBay for around $150 I think. It's been a while but they have been on there. Newer models are less around $85. The CTM is your Central Timer Module and it controls all the accessories in your truck.

Sorry guys, I used to do this stuff every day at Dodge, but I sure can't remember now. I don't think the 98 & newer trucks had an RKE module, they used the Central Timer Module for RKE functions, and there were two levels, high line or low line CTM. I think only the high line CTM supported RKE and each transmitter did have to be programmed into the CTM to operate. For more details we need a guy like J Body to chime in here.

There are dozens of cheap aftermarket setups for Keyless entry out there, I think Walmart even sells them, they all seem to come with one mean looking wiring harness though.......... wow

Anyone tried one of these???

I put one in my car. it was a bulldog system. it was very easy to do, took like 2 hrs total, and 1 hr of that was tying into the factory harness. I had to tie in to 7 wires, all which were so close to each other it was dang near impossible.

the remote start kit I bought was 65 bucks, and can do keyless entry, auto door locks, and hood/trunk opening.

the nice thing about their kits, is you don't buy it for your car/truck. You buy the kit, and then go to their website, and input what you are instaling it in, and they will tell you what wires/colors/location you need to find & tie into. make sit much simpler that way.
