how do you grease the upper ball joints
I am trying to grease the upp ball joints on a 3500 97 4x4. No of my adapters will fit into the tight space as the u joint is in the way. How is it done, a speacial adapter??

My upper ball joints grease thru zerks on the top. Pretty easy access even with the front tires on. Are you talking about the u-joints on the axle shaft at the steering knuckle possibly? Stockers don't have a grease fitting.
A needle tip for your grease gun should fit in there if you have aftermarket u-joints. NAPA has them. Kurt |
My lower ball joints have the zerks coming throught he top of the joint. I have to jack the axle up and rotate the tire to gain clearance. If you haven't tried it, it should give you enough clearance.

Mine have a little plug instead of a grease fitting, when I want to grease them I unscrew the plug and put in a 90 degree fitting, the universal will hit the fitting with the 90 in there if you turn it,then I use a grease needle ,PITA but easier than replacing the joints I only grease the upper ones once a year.

sounds like the upper joints are all different. The grease fitting on the upper is pointing down towards the u-joint. a standard grease gun will not fit in the tight space. will look for a 90 degree adapter.

On my 98 it has the little plugs facing down , remove them and install 90 fitting , grease and remove 90 and reinstall plug ,axle will snap 90 off if left in there.. Major PITA , jack tire off ground to move axle around to the best location for getting fingers at the plug.Like I said PITA , I only do mine once a year also . My 02 has them facing upwards and easy to get a grease gun on.
