If I remember right, Haulin In Dixie did that job awhile back. Holler at him and see if he has any suggestions. Do remember it was a big job tho...

While I don't know the exact steps, a mechanic buddy of mine says that the job can be done in half the time of you just swing the dash up, and prop it, after taking it loose. You will be able to remove the heater box with the dash porpped up out of the way.
He loves those jobs because the book time pays big but he can do it in less than half the time he gets paid for.

The dash does NOT have to come out. Just pivot the passenger side out and bungie strap it from the grab handle while you pull out the heater box. It really isnt a hard job once you have done it.

well i got it done, thatnks for all you gusy help and responses. I took the dash apart friday night, the went out for the night, and resumed on the fix yesterday morning. Then finished the job yesterday about 2 o'clock. All in all the job sucks but it is do-able, i didnt take out the dash i just loosened it and pulled back the passenger side and cut out the sound deadining right abouve where the heater core is, and it came out fine and the new one went in fine. then i replaced the hoses and put everything back together. I drove the truck around last night and eerything seems to be in working order, there are fpggy windows or an anti-freeze, sweet smell, so i guess i did well. The only thing is when i first start my truck i hear a rush of water, i think it is just the coolant going into the core, is that right?

The rush of water is probably normal. Especially if you use your block heater.

Did you say you are getting the sweet smeel and foggy windows? If so your leaking. I hope it's a typo .

Hows your hands? Everytime I dig into the dash, I'm good for a few cuts and scrapes. Did you check out the evaporator for the a/c while you were in there? They can get pretty gunky, and would be a good time to clean it up a little.

I'm interested in how you were able to just "loosen it and pulled back the passenger side". If you could elaborate on that a little more. Thanks, Kevin

Yeah that was a type o, i do not have the foggy windows or the sweet smell, everyhting seems to be fine i am glad i finally can see out my windows while driving. I do have a few cuts on my hands though. No, I did not check the evaperator while I was in there, though it would have been the smart thing to do. As far as pulling the dash back, I just loosened the bolts on each side of the cabin on the bottom bracket(two bolts in total), then i took the radio and all that stuff out in the middle, but left in the heater controls, once that stuff is out you can take the bottom panels off the dash and while you are down there, there is a metal plate that is held in by 6 screws, if you drop it out the you can drop the steering column to the seat. After all this is done it is more or less a bunch of pulling. you will have to look through the hole were the radio was and there is a breacket that goes into the fire wall, which you must pull down on when pulling back and out with the dash. I know this may be hard to follow i dont think i am very good at telling exactly what i did, because it was my first tiem doin the heater core so i did take some stuff apart that did not need to e taken out. But if you can folllow it i hope it helps some , anyways if, or when I ever have to do it agian i will take pics and use them to help me display what i did. let me know if that helps or if you need any answers or better details
