Gosh Darn Fuel Sending Unit!!!

Has anybody found a better alternative to the stock pos fuel sending unit? My second one just went out this morning. Ran out of fuel on the way to work said I still had a 1/4 tank. Same thing as the last one.

My answer to the sending unit is to reset the trip odometer at every fill. Then I go 300 to 400 miles and fill again. The reason I only go 300 to 400 miles is that way I won't need to worry about running out of fuel. It has worked for three years without a problem. You can adjust the miles for whatever suits your needs.

I do the same thing as MnTom. Don't even think about looking at the gauge anymore. I also use 350 miles as the norm. Usually leaves me about 10-15 gallons in the tank for a cushion.

I've seen something like this before where the sender was showing higher than the fuel...

I would check the bottom of the tank and make sure it's not dented inward or one of the steel bands is not bent upwards.

I found this on a older Dodge truck and it will make you laugh when you do find it...

Arrow Same here,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It only took me one time of running out of fuel and having to go through the "Roadside-Bleed-The-Injectors-Restart" to start using the trip-meter. I was lucky that my wife was at home,,,, and it only took 10 minutes for her to get there with 5 gallons of fuel,,,,,,, and I wasn't sitting on the shoulder of a busy interstate highway,,,,,, and I had the tools and knowledge necessary to crack the injectors.

I may fix it one day,,,,,,,,,,,,,, BUT,,,,, I'll never trust it again!

There are links to a couple of ways to inprove the sender here-

I've never tried them myself, seem simple though.

Mine only works for the first 2 gallons then read empty. So I reset my trip meter every fuel then drive 500 miles then start looking for a fuel station. That has worked for 2 and a half years
