Fuel gauge not working

Can be topped off and the gauge does not move. Where do I start. This is on my 2001.

Common problem on the 2nd Gen trucks, most likely the fuel sender. Around $75 to replace. Fixed my problem anyway.

any way to test it to make sure that is what it is? where is it? Probably in the tank right???

JARHEAD Feb 29, 2008 05:37 PM

is it dealer only or do the parts houses have it?

95dodgectd Feb 29, 2008 05:51 PM

yup you gotta drop the tank for it. idk go to your local parts place and ask them for a sending unit for a 2001 dodge ram 2500 diesel.

You can test the resistance of the sending unit, it should be 20/200 Ohms. I can't remember which one is full and which one is empty however.

What parts house did you get yours at? I am batting a .000 right now. The dealers are telling me I can only buy the pump unit as a whole. My pump is not in the tank of course.

Search the site for a fix on this. I did it about 3 mnths ago. Raised the bed, pulled the unit out, performed the fix and it has worked ever since. It cost about .$25 for the push nut (washer) at ace hardware and is really easy to do.

I got mine at my local dealership [tapdshut], but you can order it online if you would like (it's usually cheaper). The part number for the '02 was: 4897669AB 028AA (level unit) and I paid $70 for it.

This is for the folks that have the problem of the float somewhat disintegrating, which was not the case for me. On mine the electronics simply went bad.

You can still get it through the dealer, so your dealers parts guy is full of it.

My fuel gauge hasn't worked for over 2 years.

I always go by the trip odometer, so it hasn't been of significance to me.

I also have no access to any kind of facilities to repair this, other than taking it to the local dealer that I can't afford.
