fuel economy guage fluxuation

A buddy of mine has an 01 and the overhead fuel economy instrument moves between 12 and 35 miles per gallon. I was curious if anyone else had this problem or an idea how to fix it. Thanks.

Could always try and do a recalibration or reset, whatever the manual calls it.

My 98 fuel gauge tends to jump around. The previous owner said not to trust it until the truck was fully warmed up, and he watched the trip meter more than the gauge. Any thoughts what this could be?

Alright I'll see if I can figure out how to reset it. Thanks.
