Front Spring Numbers - different ratings
I was crawling around under my new truck and noticed that the tags on the front springs had numbers on them. One was a #39 and one was a #46. I had found a spec page earlier that listed ratings of each of these springs and I decided to compare mine. Turns out the #39 spring is rated at 1688 lbs and the #49 springs are rated at 1854 lbs. I thought this was strange to have two different ratings so I called the dealership to verify. After three different attempts, I found a compitent (at least over the phone) parts person who took my VIN number and checked the specs. Sure enough the springs are correct even thought they have different ratings. Go figure???? ???
I think the reason is two-fold.

1- Engine torque. The engine when turning twists to one side, so they put a heavier spring on that side to compensate.

2- Driver weight. DC figures half the driving around is done with one person in the vehicle, heavier spring compensates for extra weight on one side.

opinion, speculation, not based on fact.

phox
Here's a question for ya. If the springs are different ratings for each side, when you go and buy a leveling kit that includes new springs, are the new springs set up for that, or are they both the same?

That would be a real good question for the "Experts" at the company of your choosing.

Re:Front Spring Numbers - different ratings
My truck has the same 46/39 spring combo. I called Skyjacker the other day with some questions about their 2.5" front springs. I happened to ask them if they were the same rate for each side, and they said they were. When I told them that the factory uses a stiffer front spring on the driver's side, the guy said he had never heard of that. I don't know if it really matters or not. On my truck, the passenger side measures 3/4" lower to the top of the fender lip than the driver's side. That makes me think it might be better if they are the same rate.

Is that with an equivilent weight in the driver's position?

Re:Front Spring Numbers - different ratings
All those #s are Kg/mm of weight you can convert it to lbs/in.
They are different for many reasons.
If you do switch to aftermarket springs, you`ll notice that most are the same left/right the reason is they make them over (stiff) so you don`t notice a difference L to R.
It all works.
If you want take your 46 and move it to the other side of the truck and buy one 54 this will equal out weight transfer and also raise the truck about an inch.
Hope this helps anyone thats interested.
Danny

Re:Front Spring Numbers - different ratings
Roger that. I was just going to add that the Skyjackers I recently put into the front end of my truck lifted both sides equally, with the "driver installed". And when I put a 200 lbs. bumper on the front, the sag was less than half an inch. Handles better, IMHO. The aftermarkets have such different casting, torsional, and loading characteristics and cheap pricing that they probably offer a better way to go, even if you were to find used DC springs. (Used springs? Defeats the purpose.)
