Has anyone stiffing up their frame to to reduce the flex?

I'm having this annoying problem when my lance camper is on the truck and it's windy outside. The cab seems to flex (which means the frame is flexing) and it causes a larger gap between the door and cab, which causes LOTS of wind noise inside the truck. It's only on the driver side since my wife doesn't heard it on her side. And it's only when the lance camper #2400 is on the back.

Sounds like you have bigger problems than simple flex. I have a '98 and have had a 3500lb slide in, too big but no flexing, and now have a 2000lb Lance with no flexing. That frame should be handling it. You may have a weak frame, or cracked. Maybe needs boxing in of the frame rail or fish plating it to strengthen it. I put mine on the roughest roads in the country for 25k a year, and only have a 3/4" gap between the cab and camper with the wind deflector. It never flexes enough to touch.

 

I have a 4000lb camper on a 3500 quad cab, have approx. 45000 miles with camper loaded on truck, can't say there has been any issue as described.

 

I wonder if the camper may simply be causing turbulence on a windy day, which is acting on your door which may have already been a bit loose on adjustment. Does the driver door seem to fit as tightly as the passenger door when the truck isn't moving?

 

While I dont have a camper on my truck and as such this may mean absolutely nothing but I have some pretty decent drivers side wind noise when the wind blows hard from the right and only at that time. Never happens from pass side if blowing from the right or left. It is annoying as heck just because it is loud but havent really found the answer. Fortunately it only does it when the wind is howling pretty good say 20mph above and from the right and I am driving at highway speeds 60+mph. It has been doing it for as long as I can remember. The door alignment looks good and I have thought about trying to add more door frame weatherstripping etc but have just never gotten around to it. I do have a headache rack but I cant believe that is causing it but who knows I havent figured it out and apparently it hasnt bothered me enough to do so but it is annoying when it does it.

 

BarryG, I think we have similar problem. It only happens to my truck when the wind is blowing from the right side. These are gusty wind condition. Instead of being at 12 o'clock to go straight, the steering wheel is at 2 o'clock just to fight the wind force to go straight. Once I go side by side with a semi, which block the wind, no noise.

I checked my truck this morning, parked, and using my finger (very scientific) to measure the gap on the driver and passenger side and it appears to be the same. But I know when it's making the wind noise, I can put my finger much deeper in on the driver side and I can feel the door frame vibrating. I did notice my driver door kinda drop/slump down a few millimeter when I open it. The passenger door is solid. Maybe it needs some new door hinge? It's 250K!

 

I think door hinge pin and bushings replacement and possible readjustment of hinges will solve the problem.

 

Now it sounds more like a wind problem than flexing. Even mine does that if the wind is just right. I think it is just the Aero design of the truck. It has done that on every 2nd gen I have had. But no frame flexing. I always thought mine was caused by the rain shields above the side windows I like to put on my trucks. If the wind is causing it you should notice that it changes when you change direction of travel. mine does.

 

in cross winds mine feels like my door isn't shut all the way- I even get rained on even with the windows all the way up in extreme weather conditions like this that was filmed only 15 minutes away from my home,

 

So I took my trunk and lance out again this weekend. This is the first time I trailered my fishing kayak ... man, I really felt the weight of that trailer and kayak !

So this time, I kept my ears out to gather all the details.

Going up to 50 mph, I hear no wind noise.

Going 50+ mph - 70 mph, I did hear a small amount of wind noise. I put my finger between the door jam and cab and I could feel a small amount of door vibration.

The few times I heard loud wind noise inside, I put my finger between the door jam and cab and there is definitely a larger gap and the door frame vibrated more violently. I could see the tree branches swinging to it was windy.

So now it's a wind problem. Hopefully, they still sell new door hinges. I will report back if I find a solution.
