floor board rust prevention

I know my truck has rust inside the truck on the floor board. I am going to clean the rug and want to get rid of this. I know paint will just rust again. I have heard of putting roofing tar on the rust and then plastic over it to stop the smell and the rug sticking to it. Ant thoughts on this, or better ideas.

Anything you cover the metal with will rust again unless its completely covered all the way around the part. Thats near impossible once everythings assembled =(

Id take up the carpet, wire-wheel the rust off and spray zinc etch primer on it all the way around. Then put something over it like rustoleum or whatever. Check out eastwoodco.com.
phosphoric acid / zinc rust converter is good for the places you cant reach by hand

I have the same problem and am also look for a solution before I get holes in the floor. I used the tar technique years ago when I was a teenager. Problem is the stuff gets soft in the heat, melts, oozes into everthing, you still get the smeel, and I probably would not do it again.

My thoughts are to clean it up with a wire wheel or a abrasive wheel (like the 3m type nylon abrasive wheel) and I was considering something like por-15.

I like the idea of the phosphoric acid etching as well, and maybe that along with the por-15. I don't know for sure. Hopefully someone can come up with a good solution.

Another thought is waxoyl, but that can have an odor and oozing problem as well, but it will slow down the rust greatly. KD

hi
clean it as best you can , whire wheel , ect .

use some metal prep dupont and others make it .
it will disolve rust if left on long enough and leave a fosfate coating to resist rust . it actualy mixes with water !

thougherly dry befor any paint so no moisture i traped under paint or more rust will come !

paint with some por 15 , or zero rust or galvinizing primer , and a topcoat.

good luck , i hate body work .

Second the POR 15. One of my other vehicles is a 78 Datsun Z & rust is like kudzu on those cars. POR works well. You only need to paint it if it's in the sun & you don't want color to oxidize or you want some other color. I used POR on some places where I wanted to stop the rust till I could get it to the body shop. The rust appears stopped. Won't know for sure until I ....well, get to the body shop.
