Advice on buying a new truck maybe
So I have a 1999 3/4 ton . Did the injection pump 2 years ago, new fuel pump , brakes , batteries, some ball joints recently . It has 460,000 kms on it . Original auto Tranny . It's paid for . Minimal rust . I use it every day for work as well it's my pleasure driver . A bone stock 2001 Laramie has popped up for $10,5000 Canadian . It has 290,000 kms on it . No upgrades what so ever . My question is , should I look at the 2001 and maybe sell mine ? Should I keep mine because 460,000 kms isn't very much for these trucks? Or should I look at a 3rd gen with 4 doors and get into something a little newer ? Just seems a lot of the 2nd gens go for sale with around 500,000 kms on them . I'd love to hear some opinions . Thanks for any advice

Depends on how much you like your truck and if it suits your needs, or do you just want something else? That many miles (kilometers) is not terribly high for the motor but the transmission and truck itself can start to show age. If your truck is in decent shape and everything works then the only big ticket item you may have to consider is the tranny if it starts to get weak.
With that said, I guess if you can get a decent price for yours and get a 2 year newer truck with almost half the miles, thats not too bad. I'm not sure I'd look for a 3rd gen though unless you got one late in the generation models because the early 3rd gens had injector issues. Injectors for a 3rd gen are about three to four times the cost of injectors for a 2nd gen.

Katoom ... that's exactly the info I need to learn. Thanks for the input . Everything I've learned so far is only 2nd gen . Any other do's and donts with the 3rd or 4th gen ? Mine is fine and I've got a rockin stereo . But isn't a new Tranny around $4000 ? ( Canadian) if I knew mine would run another couple hundred thousand I'd keep it . But since I rely on it 6-7 days a week for work ,I need something reliable .

I cant speak for all the issues on 3rd and 4th gen trucks.....but just know that they all have their fair share of issues. With new models comes new problems and the consumer is generally the guinea pig. If you're interesting in finding out as much as you can about those generation trucks then comb through the internet reading any and all Cummins/diesel trucks you can. There's a few good ones too.
If you keep your truck at stock power, change the tranny fluid in timely manners, dont let the tranny fluid get over 225*, have the bands tightened every now and again, it should last quite awhile. Cant say how long but things only last as good as you take care of them.
Cost for an auto can vary. I dont know about costs in Canada but in the USA you can have that tranny rebuilt for probably $2500. But you can also get a nice custom built unit for between $3000 and $5000. The higher price one being basically capable of handling any amount of power or trailer weight.

My 2007 has been far more reliable than my 98.5.
The 3rd's with a 5.9 are fine it's just finding one with service records that hasn't been beat to death or lived in the Rust belt.

Mine sounds like yours, I'm keeping mine. How much is 10,5000 in us dollars?
We're still using inches, miles and putting the decimal in the 3rd position down here!!
And quit drinking all the Moosehead and send some down here!
