Doors! Whose got doors
So I took my truck to a buddy who does body work. He took one look at the doors and said "So, can you get some decent used doors?" So here I am. What's available? Anyone?

what's wrong with your doors?
|
Guessing if he is like me, they are rusted on the bottom.

I was able to replace just the door skins on my truck, $225 for both on Craigslist... |
Rick's right. They are at the point where fixing them will cost more than finding decent replacements....

LMR sells repop door shells, but they are kinda spendy.
http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/...And-Components QC might be fun to get though. |
LMC does as well. I'm searching Car-part.com now.

Clean up & POR15 now - for those whose doors aren't already fubared. I took a paint chip to Home Depot & had them mix some Rustoleum (similar) that color matched until I decide to paint. Rustoleum is $8/qt but didn't have metal flake. Damage was on the bottom and my truck doesn't have perfect paint anyway so result was acceptable. This makes a good Spring project.

My problem is everything in my area has the same problem I do!

same here - LMC, Us autoparts, Lighthouse in TX has some on eBay for reasonable, but only has ps side in stock ATM.
Catch the rust quick otherwise it's more than skins- need a new door bottom on both of mine now as well as 2 rockers and front fenders. |
Mine have already been repaired once.

For whats it's worth for those of us, the lucky ones, who don't have rust on the door bottoms, I use an aircraft corrosion inhibitor and spray it up in the door accesses several times a year. It seems to soak into the seam and adds good protection against rust. It's been working since 97 on the doors, unfortunatly I can't say that about a couple other places on my truck. Just my .O2

if you have surface rust sometimes you can sand it down so you have a clean edge around the rusted area, then spray some phosphoric acid-based treatment on it. That will prep the bare metal and make sure rust doesnt spread again under the paint or filler you put on top. Ive done this with good results.. but the key to longevity is a couple good coats of paint and making sure to touch up chips before rust sets in again.
Also, any paraffin based protectant works well inside the door and along the edge of the seam where its bent up over the shell. this stuff lasts awhile and repels water nicely. Any good paint will protect you from rust but once rust finds an edge or a chip to get under it starts all over again.. you have to treat the whole part inside and out. I didnt have good results with tannic acid based rust converters.. I liked the phosphoric acid ones best. |
