For starters, the 6.0 PS seem to be junk. Some work, wome do not. They may have some nicer interiors, at a price. But if it is broke, who cares?
The Gen 2's have 2 issues, bad LP(fixed by using a FP gauge and keeping a spare) and the dash cracks. VP44's are also mentioned, but many are lost due to bad LP's, so it would seem. Other than that they seem to have been very solid. 2002 & 1 seem to be preferred years.
The 5.9 Cummins is awesome. It is also more fuel effecient than Ford, many get over 20mpg solo.
The 7.3 PS seem to be good, but most are getting older now.

put it this way, you could get a good interior truck with a decent engine, or a decent interior truck with a great engine.

would you rather be on the side of the road trying to fix an engine problem or on your way home wondering why your headliner is drooping down, or your dash cracked somewhere?

When it comes to p-ups I am a GM man at heart but here I am. FOr diesel I wouldn't own anything but this Cummins. I like the look of my 2nd gen Dodge but the rest of the rig has some serious issues. IMO it is a cool body style, reasonable aminities, great motor, but the rest of the rig is garbage. The Body metal is pop can thin (they all are anymore) the auto tranny is a POS, the fuel delivery is crapola, there are misc... electonic parts that are GOING to fail so on and so fourth. I am seriously torn about this rig. I love driving it but walk on egg shells about the next thing that is going to break..... I have considered selling it on more than one occasion but have not been able to bring myself to do it. I guess it is the drewel factor when I hear the sweet, sweet sound of that i-6 ratteling under the hood..... For what it is worth; if you want a diesel it is really a no brainer.....

i think it depends on where you live in hot climates it seems to be a problem but i've seen 1000 trucks here and never even heard of a dash crack before

I used to be a GM guy through and through- until I bought my CTD. My truck has 252,943 miles and the biggest repair I've had was the transfer case went bad about 1k ago. I was trying to pull a UPS truck out of my driveway when I snapped something in the case. Everything else has been minor- water pump at 230K, track bar and ball joints at 200k. As with anything, good preventative maint. is the key to longevity. Personally, I would never own a Ford, no matter how nice the interior. I was a mechainc for 10 years and Ford trucks kept us in business. The aggravating thing is trying to get the right parts for a Ford... you need the VIN , the build code on the axle, the date of production, and the assembler's mother's maiden name to get in the ball park. I digress...what I mean to say is go with the Dodge.

I have 120,500 miles on my 2001, and so far I have had the left side rear license plate bulb blow. That is the extent of body repairs. It is tight, no rattles, no rust, no leaks,no dash cracks or other flaws. I live 6 months in nortwestern Tennessee and 6 months in south central Florida. Thanks to liberal use of my Jake exhaust brake my brakes look like they will last about 250,000 miles. The otiginal tires lasted 97,000 miles with no uneven tread wear, and the frontend is still tight. This entire truck has been perfect since new.
