Cummins in a Boneyard

Over the last several months, I've been in and out of various boneyards throughout NJ and PA, looking for a few parts for my 92. Not once did I see a First Gen Diesel in any of the yards I went to. As matter of fact, I didn't even see any Cummins diesels in any pickup.. until today...

Found this 2nd gen dodge in a boneyard, here in NJ. Engine is still in it, and I'll assume the trans is too, but I didn't look real close. Just under the fender to see if the lump still existed...

This is the first Cummins I've seen junked..... Ever.

The frame is GONE. Cancer took it all, as the truck was used for plowing. It actually looks a little sad....

They are pretty in demand I would imagine and the junker's know what they are worth and how to get rid of them.

That hump looks like the frame rail, but there's a Dana 60 and a decent hood and grille!!!

I've been hauling crushed cars part time out of wrecking yards around the NW for over 3 years and I can only recall seeing one myself. It was pretty much all there but slightly crunched. Looked fixable and we didn't crush it that time and that was about 2 1/2 years ago. I just hauled out of that yard about a week and half ago and they had an early 2nd Gen V/10 they sold out of the yard. They moved it out while I had to wait with the rig since it was behind the crusher.

NJT, what parts are you looking for? Also, I think I saw a 92 in the classifieds that was being parted out.

TR,

I've found most of what I needed for my truck, as it's pretty complete. I've been not working recently, and thought I'd cruise all of the boneyards here, looking for anything that could be used by myself or other members. If I find dodges in boneyards, I make notes (mental) as to what is where, and keep that in mind. If something comes up where someone needs an item I saw, I can tell them where I saw it.

Really just trying to see if there are any 1st gens in the yards.. Haven't found a single one. I did, however find a 1959 biscane 4 door that was in decent shape. (from first impression but I didn't get close enough to see the underbody) The junker says he has the title and it was for sale. It wasn't far from the 69 caprice convertible that was disappearing before my eyes...

Hate seeing those classic cars just fading away.

When I bought my 2001 truck new it was a bottom of the line fleet truck so no AC. I thought I would just get the parts from the wrecker. Noooo. I didn't find a single diesel engine truck anywhere. The gas trucks use a different everything except evaporator, which is prone to leaking and the dryer which no one wants. I ended up buying new parts.

West Coast 1st gens in a boneyard.

Was floating around pee-bay, and I found a company in OR that has a 1st gen or two...

Light Truck Parts

Found another boneyard called Atkinson's auto parts in Southern Texas They had a 91-93 w250 1st gen as well.

Let us know if they have anything good out there....

How many would you fellers like to see?
"Most" trucks in junkyards are wrecked and come from insurance auctions.
1st gen trucks are few and far between at these auctions because there are just not many out there carrying full coverage insurance. When they get wrecked, they wind up in the back yard instead of the insurance company.
2nd gens....getting to be the same quickly.
There will always be some that wind up in junkyards that come from locally, private owned. These are the ones that are setting in somebody's back yard (wrecked, worn out, retired fleet, etc). These are few and far apart, and in todays "salvage world"....there just isn't much demand for a "worn out truck sitting in a field". Aside from scrap value.
Not easy to find a cummins truck that the owner wants to sell for scrap value, regardless of it's condition.

Pics:
Frames out of cummins trucks (so far this year).
Brown truck (something to do next week).
BIG bumper truck, engine still in it. (frame pile will be +1 by Monday)
Cylinder head..or two?
You can see a wrecked Cummins at this place any day of the week. But, the next week...it won't be the same truck you say the week before.

I'll put ya to work!

A junkyard full of Cummins trucks is a sure sign of one of two things.
Laziness and/or wealth.

I'm too broke and stupid to be just real lazy. So, after years of Research, I've decided how to tell if a salvage yard parts out cummins trucks.

Simply inquire about 5.9 crankshafts.
1) No? Might be good place to buy Prius parts.
2) $400 crankshaft? They accidentally wound up with a Cummins
3) $200 crankshaft? Rookies.
4) $50 crankshaft, or cheaper by the dozen? You're in the right place.

I bought a 2002 disc-brake rear-end to go under my '95 from Redlinear about 2 years ago. He told me the truth about the rearend, the price was good, and he's a first-rate guy in my book. He didn't know me from Adam, and didn't know I even posted here on DTR, so I doubt he gave me any special attention or a special deal. I've put about 60,000 miles on that rear-end since then and it's a good one. I'd recommend his yard if you need anything. He sells a lot on ebay, which is where I first ran across him. He's telling the truth about how many Dodge/Cummins he parts out--I saw piles and piles of Dodge/Cummins heads, trannys, cranks, etc. etc.

NJTman, redlinear is in Ark. along with someone else I suspect he is in cahoots with because they both sell on ebay out of the same area. LOL. Redlinear advertises correctly and shows the part he is selling. the light truck parts you mentioned earlier shows a pic of a truck they he may or may not be pulling the part off of- it's a hook! I'm sure it works, but I want to see the part. LTP has the same pic of truck that I asked about parts from over a year ago. redlinear will answer all your questions- stupid or not usually within a day. NOW you said NJ,pa area boneyards and my ears perked up, you are in the northern parts of NJ, cuz down here where I'm at near exit #1 off the turnpike I get to hit 4 states for boneyards. I need parts off that red 2nd gen you saw . I know where there are a couple of 1st gens in northern Md. boneyard. Heck, I may have what you need. So PM me and we'll exchange info. Crossy
