CTDs, how do they get so heavy??!
I'm amazed by the weight of the CTDs, where does all of it come from? So I started looking for data but still have quite a bit missing. It seems like most (3/4 ton) trucks here are weighing in around 6800lbs with an empty fuel tank.
Dodge Cummins BR2500 Quad Cab Short Bed 4x4
6468lbs curb weight 3986/ 2482
GCWR 20,000, GAWR 5200/6084
Weight...... Item
1500.........Cab with full interior
1200... ....Frame
1022........6BT 5.9L
650.........Rear Axle, Dana 80 Hybrid
550..........Bed
518..........Front Axle, Dana 60
500..........Front Clip
250..........5spd manual NV4500HD
120........Tires, Stock
120..........Batteries
110.........Fluids minus fuel
100..........Coolers
92............Wheels 16"
90............NV241D Transfer Case
80...........Engine accessories
65...........Spare Tire
50..... ......HX35
45............Stock Hitch
35...........Stock Front Bumper
35...........Stock Rear Bumper
30............Clutch
30............Flywheel
~7192lbs
Or really what I'm wondering is how hard/ expensive is it to make them lighter? Not worth the money? The only easy weight saves I can think of is swapping the steel spare with an aluminum one, maybe redoing the seat brackets with aluminum, aluminum hitch, any others?
Just approximations of weight, most were not measured.

Chapter President
Try finding the list weight back in 89 before they actually reduced the engine weight (over 1000lbs). This is the lighter version.
Why all the weight concern? Saving 50 lbs with the alumunum stuff is like 1% of the total weight. If you compare truck weights amoungst the 3 brands, they aren't that different. You know how much an Allison transmission weighs?

Thanks for the reply Lil Dog,
I was actually quite shocked the motor only weighs 942lbs, which leaves me even futher wondering how the rest of the truck still weighs 5500lbs?!
I guess I wouldn't mind reducing it because it affects everything positively. Braking distance reduced, acceleration increased, better fuel mileage due to less mass being accelerated. Odds are it'd only help offset the crap I'd add but I don't want a 8000lb truck when I'm done. My Talon weighed ~3000lbs stock and I managed to rip out ~75lbs of stuff, in theory the CTD should be even easier to save a bunch of weight.

Ready to run the engine is more like 1100 pounds. You forgot the flywheel and clutch weights. How about the cab?? My quad 2500 with five speed weighed 7250 ready to run. Also the pu bed is 500 or 600 pounds. When I put my fat butt in the seat, the weight goes way up.

The cab & the front clip weighs alot more that 500 lbs.I would say more like 1500 lbs.cab, doors, seats, dash, glass, hood, fenders, inner fenders, core support, intercooler, radiator, condensor, hoses, belt, wiring,ac pump, alternater, powersteering pump,Get my drift theres alot more to a vehicle than what you think.

Thanks for the replies,
Yes the block, transfer case, tranny, and axles are made from cast iron.
I didn't think the flywheel or clutch weight were enough to consider, 30lb ea? Jeeze I didn't realize those beds are so heavy! Does that include the tailgate? Ok I'd agree with the motor as I seen the Marine 6BT weighs about that ready to run.
Yea I was thinking of having the radiator/condensor/ intercooler on there as they add up pretty big, there are a LOT of things in one just trying to get a general idea. I guess if the body actually weighs that much it is the missing piece to the puzzle.
"hoses,belt, wiring,ac pump,alternater,powersteering pump," probably 80lbs.
"core support, intercooler,radiator,condensor" another 100lbs
Fenders are virtually weightless, hood is a good 45lbs but is factored in with body.
"cab, doors, seats, dash, glass" The doors probably weigh at least a quarter of it, I'd say about 70lbs each. I can't see how the cab with all this stuff could be over 500lbs.

You also need to take into consideration the fluid capacities of the CTD compared to other engines.
All that oil and coolant adds up, figure about 8lbs per gallon.
Not to mention bigger transmissions and bigger axles need more oil.

With all due respect, what is the purpose of this? The trucks weigh over 7000 pounds. The six speed is a hunk alone. You have 40 pounds of water in the truck, driveshafts etc. The flywheel may only weigh 30 pounds as you say, but feels heavier when holding it up to start a bolt. I think you are way off on the cab weight. Glass is heavy. After lifting the dash you will have a new respect for the weight of the cab.

I was just thinking about that, at least the coolant as it weighs about as much as the radiator! 6 gallons of coolant, 3.75gallons of motor oil, 1 gal each for tranny and front axle, rear axle takes 1.25 gallons, transfer case takes .8 gallons, assuming empty fuel tank so I won't figure in those 34 gallons. So that totals 13.8 gallons which is another 110lbs.
Is the weight for the frame and dana 80 about right? I just took a stab in the dark for those.

Just wondering how they got so heavy/ how to hard it'd be to make them lighter. I'm not sure how heavy the "glass" is, it is just a high density clear piece of plastic. Did they add that much to it? A dash from the factory should be real light, I believe they are injection molded. While I can hardly believe the cab weighs 3/4 of the motor but I put the interior in as 250 and cab as 500.

I worked in a body shop & have lugged these parts around for years & trust me they are heavy.A bare stripped down regular cab with no glass & interior was all that 4 big men could carry & set on a frame.A full extended cab with 4 doors, interior & glass is at least 1500lbs & a complete front clip is 500 easy.
